Identifying a Crest.... Also
« on: Thursday 19 September 19 09:48 BST (UK) »
Hi all, I am new here. Im guess im not hugely into Heraldry or history for that matter. But im doing up an old house and this crest is on the bay near the apex of the roof. Its seems so random but then again I actually dont know very much about this kind of thing. It appears to be some kind of bird/phoenix with an arrow through its neck. The House is called "Eaton Brae House" and it is in South Dublin. I believe it was originally built by an English Officer in the early 1800's. Can anybody shed any light on its meaning? Thanks in advance.

Yes, that is it. It doesn't make any reference to the Crest though does it? Or am I missing something? Thanks for your swift reply.

It is a Griffon's head. A phoenix's head has feathers hanging down at the back like a short pigtail.

I would think that it is the crest of the original owner / builder.

Maybe Caldbeck Crest?

......decorative plasterwork enrichments, all highlight the artistic potential of a country house having historic connections with the Caldbeck family including Thomas Fulton Caldbeck JP (1821-91), one-time High Sheriff of County Dublin (fl. 1871; Thom's Irish Almanac 1864, 1512); and William Eaton Caldbeck JP (1854-96), 'late of Eaton Brae Shankill County Dublin' (Calendars of Wills and Administrations 1896, 45; cf. 60260154)
