It would be helpful to know what you have already found out, so people are not spending their time duplicating what you already know.

Which Census did you find the family on? The 1871? What about the 1881?
And what do you mean by 'most of the family'?
What year were Thomas Kimmins and Rose Mullen married? And where?
Lane, Burgess: Cheshire. Finney, Rogers, Gilman:Derbys
Cochran, Nicol, Paton, Bruce:Scotland. Bertolle:London
Bainbridge, Christman, Jeffs: Staffs

there is this family who may/may not be connected

Catherine Kimmins married 31 Drogheda louth
Thomas Edward Kimmins son 5 Drogheda Louth
John Kimmins son 1 Bootle Lancs
RG13 3463 166 19

may be worth trying to find children's baptism for name of father -as father isn't present on the next census

Looks like Catherine (nee Waters) married John Kimmins in 1893 (John's father recorded as Edward):

Birth reg for son John (aged 1 in census)

    KIMMINS, JOHN        MMN WATERS
GRO Reference: 1900  J Quarter in WEST DERBY  Volume 08B  Page 314

Added: Have you checked out Scotland as a possibility?
