Looking for marriage and child of Adam Hatto
« on: Saturday 21 September 19 14:29 BST (UK) »
Adam Hatto was baptised in Chilton, Berks on 6 Sep !840, s/o Joseph Hatto and Sarah Annetts. He was in the army from 1858 to 1876, much of the time serving in East Indies. I can find him in 1891 and 1911 with wife Emma. The 1911 says they have been married 32 years (around 1879) and had 1 child who had died by 1911. His army discharge says he was going to live in Abingdon, which is where Emma says she was born. So a marriage in Abingdon seems most likely. Can anyone find his marriage and the details of their child, please? In 1911 he was living in Eynsham, Oxon and died there later in 1911, but was buried in Abingdon.

Have you looked for all Hatto Birth Regs 1879-1891 on FreeBMD in Berkshire?
Then looked for Death Regs same time frame for young children?
Cross checked Mothers maiden names on GRO?

Trish :)

Have you followed up the “niece” Louisa Gardner, 9, who is with Adam and Emma in 1881 (in Abingdon: RG11/1281/29/5) ? If they didn’t marry I wonder whether she is actually their child but under her mother’s maiden name.

I think her birth reg is as Louise Gardiner, no mmn, Sep qtr 1871 Abingdon.

There is at least one Emma Gardiner of the right sort of age born in Abingdon. Perhaps she is the sempstress who in 1871 (Emma Gardener 24 b Abingdon) is in Aldershot - mixing with Army men? Already pregnant with Louise, perhaps? Emma Hatto is a sempstress in 1881.

Familysearch has them recorded in the 1881 census as Hatts:

Thank you everyone.
Yes I had looked for Hatto children dying young in that time period, but none in Abingdon, Two in Wantage district, which looks like thay are Adam's brother Caleb's with his 1st and 2nd wives. Three in Faringdon district children of William Hatto and Sarah Ann Gerring, and 1 in Oxford, child of Joseph Hatto and Jessie Adams.

I had them in Abingdon in 1881 and had wondered about Louisa Gardner. I hadn't managed to find her birth registration. But it seems she is still alive in 1911 as a servant in the Pryce household.

You’re right - Louisa does seem to survive. She may be a clue to Emma’s origins, nevertheless. The mystery child may also be under the Gardiner name.

There's an Emma Hatto aged 56 from Abingdon in the 1901 census in Bampton, A tailoress, married, with a son Henry Hatto (Ancestry transcribes the name as Hersey Hatto) aged 13 born Oxford.

Hi,

The Emma Gardiner born Abingdon 1845 (as posted by Eyesee) has a mothers maiden name of Bedford (per GRO index)

Does this help, or hinder!!
