1870 birth - Jersey
« on: Sunday 22 September 19 10:02 BST (UK) »
I’m on holiday in Jersey this week.  It’s triggered me to look into a 3 x great aunt who was born here.  She’s the only family member with a channel island connection.

The 1881 census shows she was living in Lincoln with Henry and Catherine Hughes (presumably both her parents).  She was 11 and a scholar.

I’ve checked Jerripedia and I can’t spot a birth or baptism for her.

I’ve no idea how her parents came to be there.  Going by the birth locations for siblings, they weren’t there long.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

There’s a Jerripedia resource that appears to list all the births/baptisms, but I couldn’t spot her.

(Yes, that’s the right one.)

I think those entries are from Church of England registers in Jersey. Perhaps not everyone in documented. Records for Catholic churches and other denominations
are only available at Jersey Archive at present.

Ah, thanks for that.  We have a few Methodists so that’s a possibility.

In 1871 there's a Henry Hughes occ soldier born Liverpool as a patient in Lincoln.Could be him. Maybe why little Martha is with grandparents. Henry might have been posted to Jersey with army. Catherine was born in Ireland. I have an ancestor in Royal Artillery who was in Ireland then Jersey, but sometime earlier than 1870

There's a marriage on 5 April 1869 of a Henry Hughes and Catherine Staines. He's a soldier at the Royal Barracks Dublin, bachelor father John Hughes (deceased) labourer
Catherine is also of Royal Barracks Dublin, father James Staines, occ steward.
Catherine made her mark, Henry signed.
Marriage was at Roman Catholic Chapel of St Paul, registrar's district No 3 North City, Dublin North.
witnesses Anthony Durkin and Esther Bryan. Anthony signed, Ester made her mark.

Staines is close to mother maiden name (Stynes)given on Martha's siblings' birth regs in Lincoln.

I hadn’t realised people were posted to Jersey.  That’s an interesting angle to consider.

Thanks
