The most reliable is the 1871 census which lists

William Henry Popham - Head 45
Mary A Popham - Wife 34
William H Popham - Son 13
Elizabeth J Popham - Dau 12
Frederick G Popham - Son 8
Florence M Popham - Dau 1month

Frederick G Popham is the descendant which led me to William Henry Popham who was listed on Federick's Birth & Marriage certificate. So with the link of the two names in the census I have assumed this William Henry Popham to be the correct father.

I then have the other census entries as noted above which state similar birth dates/locations.

You guys are so helpful!!  :D

the marriage is on FindmyPast, but that isn't your William H, I think. If your man is the one with children William H, Elizabeth J, Frederick G and Florence, the GRO index gives mother's maiden name as Dymond.

Yep, that’s the surname and burial details I have too.

But no leads on his parents :(

Any ideas where I could look next?

Thanks

For your interest - it may give a clue - the first son William Henry's birth ref is

POPHAM, WILLIAM  HENRY JESSOP           MMN DIMOND
GRO Reference: 1857  D Quarter in STOKE DAMEREL  Volume 05B  Page 293

I can't see the marriage either.....

It's possible that William may have married twice:

Possible death reg for 1st wife Betsy:

POPHAM, BETSY        aged 30
GRO Reference: 1851   S Quarter in EAST STONEHOUSE  Volume 09  Page 231

Just a thought but it also might be worth considering that 2nd wife Mary Ann was a widow and married William under her married name.

Second marriage?

That's what I've been thinking too - Mary Ann was born in Buckland Monachorum, she says in th 1861 and 1871, in c 1837, and there's a possible Plymouth birth for her:

DYMOND, MARY  ANN     KENNAY
GRO Reference: 1837  D Quarter in PLYMOUTH  Volume 09  Page 306

And I think I have her in the 1851 aged 14, in Tavistock, born BM, a worker in a Copper Mine, with father Charles and mother Mary.  On FindMyPast transcribed as DAYMONT (which image does indicate) - haven't found on Ancestry as yet.

I have found a

- William Popham marrying a Jane Dimond in 1780 Plymouth St Andrew
- William Popham marrying Pricilla Diamond in 1770 Bideford

There are many Popham's in Bideford that I have not been able to link to the Plymouth Popham's

Strange that the name Diamond, Dimond, Dymond keeps popping up??
