PENNINGTON family in Birstall, West Yorkshire and Lancashire Connection
« on: Wednesday 25 September 19 21:13 BST (UK) »
I am new to this forum and hope somebody will be able to help me clear a block I have in my paternal family tree. I am the eldest son of Jack Pennington (1922-1994) and Gladys Barker. My grandparents were Arthur Pennington (1896-1931) and Lottie Richardson (1898-1983). Arthur's parents were John Thomas Pennington (1868-1904) and Emily Glover (1867-1913). All of the above were born or lived in Birstall, West Yorkshire, and all details are correct.

John Thomas' parents were James Pennington (1846-possibly 1890) and Ann Delamore (1847-1908). James was born in Bolton and Ann was born in St. Helens. Unfortunately, PENNINGTON is a common name in the greater Manchester area. I think James and Ann married in 1868 but cannot find any marriage record. Can anyone help?

In ancestry.co.uk other family trees have it that James Pennington's parents were Joseph Pennington (1816-1881) and Ann Pollitt, but I am very confident that this is wrong. I believe the correct Joseph married Ann Entwistle (1821-?) on 22 Aug 1841 at St. Mary's, Prestwich. Unfortunately there was no father named for Joseph on the marriage certificate. Can anybody help?

Other ancestry trees suggest that Joseph's parents were Joseph Pennington (1787-1841) and Jane Pugh (1784-1870) but I have not found any records to prove this. Again, can anybody help?

Any help would be most appreciated!

Welcome to rootschat, CGPennington54.

Have you identified a possible birth for James 1846 with the mmn suggested/claimed?

Added:
presumably this:
James Pennington mmn Entwistle
GRO Reference: 1847  January Quarter in Bolton Union  Volume 21  Page 210

Apply for the certificate.  Does he appear with his parents in censuses?

Hello, Pennington.
RootsChat doesn't allow names  of or other identifying information about living people to be posted on the open forum so you will need to delete information about your mother from your post.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. I hadn't expected so much help so quickly! In reply to the various posters:
Maiden Stone - apologies for my error concerning my mother - original post edited.
Chempat/Hol - thanks for all the information. Some of it just confirmed what I knew already but the marriage index link to Ann Delamore (or Ann Delllmoore) in Blackburn was what I was seeking. I also appreciate your comment about the marriage of James Pennington and Ann Pollitt - I had already concluded that this was the wrong James Pennington as far as my family tree was concerned.

Another question - is there any site (similar to the GRO site perhaps?) that enables me to search on the marriage index record (in this example 8e 535) for more information (i.e. the information normally contained on actual marriage certificates) or do you HAVE to order a copy in order to get that information?

My next big hurdle to overcome is who exactly were the parents (and siblings?) of the Joseph Pennington who married Ann Entwistle, as his father was not named on the marriage certificate in 1838. The "most likely" from other family trees on Ancestry are Joseph Pennington (1787-1841) and Jane Pugh (1784-1870) although this information is from family trees that I now know contain errors. So, again, any help most gratefully received.

1868 marriage - LancashireBMD say that this marriage was at "Blackburn Register Office or Registrar Attended" - which probably means that you will have to purchase the certificate for further information.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
