Rev. Thomas Powell Marriage to Margaret (?) 1813
« on: Thursday 26 September 19 02:57 BST (UK) »
The Library of Wales has a biography of Thomas Powell (1781 to 1842) Congregational Minister and Author, born Trecastle Breconshire. The Bio states that he married into a wealthy Breconshire family about 1814 and then became the minister of the Plough Church in Brecon until 1825. I have verified his tenure as minister from FindMyPast and found that his wife had five children: three of them survived:Thomas b. 1814, William b. 1816, and Josiah 1822. Margaret died soon after Josiah's birth and she was buried at Venny Vach Breconshire. Venny Vach ( alternatively known a Fenny Fach" is a small settlement about 3 miles west of Brecon, on the river Usk. It is adjacent (south-east) of the Parish of Battle, Breconshire,
I am interested in identifying Margaret, Thomas's wife. I checked FindMyPast, Ancestry, and Freereg for Thomas and Margaret's wedding with no luck. However, I did find a plausible record on Family Search of a wedding at Battle, Breconshire on 8 May 1813, with the annotation of "Groom - Denbigh North Wales"
The Library of Wales Biography states that Thomas was ordained in Denbigh and was active there until he moved to Brecon after his marriage into a "prosperous Brecon family"
The baptism record for Thomas, Thomas and Margaret's first-born, has an annotation in Thomas's handwriting "Coedgeney, Battle Parish".   Thomas's note could refer to the Village or Parish of Battle..
But I can't find who Margaret was.....

I am looking for any help in this..

Thanks once again!

It would seem he is the  Reverend Thomas POWELL aged 61 years, who died 3 Feb 1842 at Kemyes Commander, Minister of the Independant Chapel, Usk?

Death reported in the Monmouthshire Merlin 12 Feb 1842
https://newspapers.library.wales/view/3393615/3393618/31/kemyes%20commander

The 1841 Census show him in Kemeys Commander, listed aged (60) as a Farmer, wife Ann (60) and son David (20).

He has a will, the Reverend Thomas Powell of Kemyes Commander.  Mentions wife Anne. Son William. Son David.

Before trawling that will for clues, do you already know that he remarried to Anne? About son David?

Cheers

To the left facing page of the page that has the Baptism of son Thomas in 1814, is a list of all the five Powell children - looks like Thomas' own writing?

Thomas Powell , born 26th April 1814 Tuesday morn at 6 (am)
William Powell , born 19th May 1816, Sabbath at 11 at evening
David Powell  born 18 Sep 1818, died 16 Jan'y 1821, 2-3-21 ( last may refer to baptism date)
David Powell  born 25 Jan'y 1821, ........ even half past 5
Josiah Powell , born 16 Dec 1822, he died 6 weeks old.

So Anne was second wife. David born 1821 was Margaret's son and he  was the 3rd surviving child, not Josiah.

)Further find Margaret's burial record - which says she died at 7am on the 17th Dec 1822 and her new born son Josiah was baptized on her coffin on the day of her funeral)

Cheers

Hi!
Thanks for your help!

To AMBLY... yes you are quite right ... the first David died and so did Josiah. Margaret died the morning after he was born.

No, I didn't know that Thomas married again

I'll check on Thomas's will and Anne, but I am mostly interested in Margaret. Her first-born Thomas was born 26 April 1814 and baptised 2 May 1814, so I'm looking for a marriage in 1813. She died on 17 December 1822.

Thanks!!

Hello AMBLY

Yes, the FindMyPast and Family search records look identical.. I'l check to see if there is an independent Chapel called Y Batel (or similar)

Thanks!

Hello AMBLY

Yes there is a chapel called Y Batel in Battle, and there is the identical record there...
I found the old IGI files at

http://www.archersoftware.co.uk/igi/fs-bre.htm

So I'll have to look for Margaret Powell born somewhere near Battle.. she must have been quite young to have that string of children!

There are a lot of Powells there!

Hello Ambly

I can't find that will of Thomas Powell on the Library of Wales web. It has been acting out a bit the last few days, so I'll try again tomorrow..
Did you locate the will there, and is the parish Keymes Commander Llandaff?

Thanks!

the marriage looks to have been by licence, dated 9 Jan 1813 although it has been transcribed that Thomas Powell was of Derby.

Wills search not playing as you say, but when you try again put in the parish name and the search should suggest the spelling that NLW use, probably Cemais.
