Baptism Record
« on: Thursday 26 September 19 17:33 BST (UK) »
Hi was wondering if someone could point me in right direction to find my Sisters Baptism records ( she is still living).
We were adopted and I have managed to get hold of mine but I have tried to find my older sisters but to no avail.
I tried the church near to where she lived but sadly after requesting several times the Vicar told me he had better things to do. So I'm now at a standstill.
Rootschat has been so helpful in the last , fingers x
Thank you in advance

Have you tried contacting the Church Warden rather than the Vicar?  Vicars can be very busy people and requests for look ups in their records doesn't always feature on their radar.

Vicars vary from church to church, some are helpful, others not.

What about the local records office?  Or would it be too recent to be there?

Thanks for your reply.   It was the church warden I contacted a few times first who passed me to the Vicar each time. Where would the records office be  my Sister is 78 and would like to know something if it was at all possible.
Our birth was Manchester area.
Thank you.

Hi,

Have you looked at the Lancashire online parish clerks site?

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html

They do have some baptisms fro the 1940s.

Just a hint if you haven't used the site before, I often find that using the "You may click here to begin searching the whole county." link is the easiest way to search the site.

Regards,
Dasiy

I've just had a thought.  Has your sister obtained her adoption records?  I am wondering if there might be an address on them that would give you some idea of where she could have been baptised other than at the church you have already tried.

Was she definitely baptised?

We are not sure if she was Baptised we are only going off info out adoptive parents gave her when she sought permission from local vicar to be married adoptive mother told her she had been baptised.  I was (I'm 8 years younger than her) and I have my baptism records, but given her birth year (end of war) was she or wasent she and did adoptive mother just say she had been Baptised !!!
This is why she would love to find out.

In theory churches are meant to pass on records but I'm not sure what the chain involves.  Possibly to the Bishop of the area first then on to Record Offices.

I believe that all Church records do end up in Record Offices for the relevant area, but at what point they end up there I'm not sure about.  Presumably after a certain period of time but I don't know what that period of time is meant to be.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge in that field will be able to tell you.

Where was your sister living at the time of her birth?  Could she have been baptised at the church the grandparents attended?
