Golders Green Crematorium- Archives Look up?
« on: Friday 27 September 19 08:23 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I have no idea if this is even possible, but would anyone be able to call at Golders Green Crematorium to do or ask for a lookup for my man, in the archives?

John Hammond GALBRAITH died in London on 15.2.1921. To the best of my knowledge his body was cremated. Even to be able to establish what type of information is available from the archives would be helpful.

Look forward to hearing from you....

Hi Carol,

Yes I too, have e-mailed them and received a quick response. However their look up fee did not fill me with joy, taking into account the exchange rate. Hence my wondering if it is possible to obtain the information by visiting the place?

I wasn't asked to pay anything?

This was just last summer.

They do have a memorial book, my dad was cremated at Breakspear Crematorium in Ruislip,in Dec 1970 ,and he appears in that. I'll see if I can find anything out for you.

I'm not sure if we cremated anyone as early as 1921 though?

Found this on the web Carol....

Golders Green Crematorium and Mausoleum was the first crematorium to be opened in London, and one of the oldest crematoria in Britain. The land for the crematorium was purchased in 1900, costing £6,000, and the crematorium was opened in 1902 by Sir Henry Thompson.

I was asked to pay £10. Just last week.

Well blow me I really hadn't realised that crematorium's were open in the early 20th century.

I suppose £10 isn't too bad,if you find the person you want!

They must have decided to start charging to cover their costs.

They do have a memorial book but I can see no way to look at it online as you can with Breakspear Crem.

Let's hope someone is able to call in there for you.

Woking was the first Crematorium with it's first official cremation in March 1885.  It is just down the road from Brookwood Cemetery
