Hello SlabCity and welcome to RootsChat.

The Cornwall OPC has this marriage transcribed:
7 Dec 1784 at Launceston, St. Mary Magdalene, John ROWE and Mary CLOKE

www.cornwall-opc-database.org

I see that FreeReg adds that they were bachelor and spinster.

The only baptism I can see for Roger ROWE around this time though has parents John and Elizabeth?

Roger Rowe born 8 Dec 1829, bap 24 Jan 1830 at Wesleyan Methodist Launceston. Parents John ROWE (labourer) of Laneast, and Elizabeth.

(Roger then appears to marry Elizabeth RICE in 1855 - is this the correct Roger ROWE?)

I think the Roger above's parents were John ROWE and Elizabeth NORTHEY who married in Laneast 17 Feb 1828, Roger appears with the NORTHEY family in the 1841 census.

Where did you see that John ROWE and Mary CLOKE had a son Roger in 1829?

And a warm welcome to Rootschat from me.

I would suggest that the John ROWE who married Mary CLOKE (Launceston 1784) was of the previous generation to the John ROWE who married Elizabeth NORTHEY (Laneast 1828).

I agree with maddys52's findings.

There is a possible baptism on Cornwall OPC:
Launceston 17 Jul 1796 - John Courtis ROWE, son of Roger and Dorothy
- no guarantees that this is your man, but Roger could be a family name.

Philip

Hello everyone and thank you for your welcomes to RootsChat.  And thank you for your responses.
Yes, the Roger Rowe who married E. Rice in 1855 is correct.  Based on many decades-old family information, Roger Rowe's father John was to have married an Eliza Ann Pascoe on 11 Jan 1824.  My searches have not uncovered any information regarding this marriage.  Our family lore claims that John left his wife and young son to go to the Geelong district near Melbourne Australia (for reasons unknown). No further information has been found of him. However, I also have found the Northey-Rowe information and connections that you have forwarded. John Rowe and Elizabeth Northey were married for only 8 years (1828-1836) and a Northey family site lists John Rowe as either deceased or divorced from Elizabeth Northey.  This fits our family lore and I believe it is the real version. As another avenue of inquiry, in order to try to verify this, I was trying to uncover information about John Rowe and Mary Cloke's children but have been unable to do so.

parish register shows the marriage as 19 Feb 1828

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ofk/

Banns were read 27 Jan, 3 Feb, 10 Feb 1828

There will not have been a divorce as it the only way for divorce at that time was by an act of parliament, so way beyond the means of any but the very wealthy.

I was trying to uncover information about John Rowe and Mary Cloke's children but have been unable to do so.

Difficult as John ROWE is such a common name! However, there are these children baptised at Launceston with father John ROWE:
17 Oct 1785  Mary
8 July 1787    Elizabeth

There is another couple - John and Mary ROWE - baptising children at Anthony around this time, however a note on one of these baptisms says "daughter of Jacob ABBET of St Stephens" so I don't think this is John and Mary (CLOKE). Though I can't see any more baptisms at Launceston after 1787.

Modified to strike through - should have put my glasses on - this was father James, not John.  :-[
