Joseph Henry Smith and Catherine Du Feu, with son James Thomas
« on: Sunday 29 September 19 13:31 BST (UK) »
Hoping someone may be able to confirm whether these two people (married) were in Jersey. I believe Joseph was born around 1820 and Catherine 1830. Their son James Thomas Smith says on his 1876 marriage certificate (age 24) that he was born in Jersey. So that would be around 1852. I believe they were Catholic, as James was married in St Patrick's, Sydney. After searching for ages, I'm told there aren't any Catholic records online yet. Hoping someone can help, please. Many thanks.

Civil registration began at different times on each of the Channel Islands; Guernsey in 1840, Jersey in 1842, Alderney in 1850 and Sark in 1915.
So if they married in the Islands they should be there but they do not appear to be, maybe they married in France?

Thanks, Colin. Or maybe England?

I had checked free bmd as far as I can see he did not marry in the British Isles 1846 - 1855.

Many thanks. Maybe France it is. Never delved into French record as I'm all Irish, England and Scottish :)
