1871 Census addresses - Manchester
« on: Monday 30 September 19 12:54 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks,

I looked up a Sarah ATKIN who I found in Moss Side Manchester (RG10; Piece: 4007; Folio: 116; Page: 26).  I then went to the Enumerator's Notes page for District 74.  I can find a Monton Street listed and can find that on old OS maps.  However, I am struggling to identify further streets.  What I think has been done was instead of using Post Office approved street names the enumerators have used the house names - often seen high up on the front walls of rows of houses - to further identify the houses.  But no help at all when the houses have been demolished!

Firstly, do others think that is the case here?

Secondly, if that is the case, does anyone know on which street she lived?

Cheers

Mike

It says B*** Terrace? It was very common for rows of houses on a main  road to be called *** Terrace, and are not normally named on maps.

It is Beaufort Terrace. If you go to the Enumerator’s description on the first page, it lists the various terraces and the numbers of houses on each one.

That’s great Stan. I found it on the 1891 Town Plan.

Thanks both,

I was using the NLS maps which don't show Terrace names.  I can continue with my note let now.
