Thanks everyone so much for your interest and help.  I'll definitely follow this up by sending the photos to a free site to see if I can get it authenticated.   It really has been fun, and so interesting, and I hope you're enjoyed following the thread as much as I have.  I'll certainly let you know if and when I find out anything else.

I am concerned that Viktoria might get bored again, and by coincidence,  I have  recently had to go through the entire house moving Stuff because new windows have been fitted - and I have come across large-ish bag of paintings and prints which I put away when I moved here eight years ago.  Can't quite remember what's in there, but if there are any which look to be of interest, I'll post on another thread if anyone's interested, so we could do the same all over again.   ;D

Many thanks everyone for your input,
GS x

Just to throw something into the mix - "wagen hooi" is a strange construction, at least it would be in modern Dutch. "Hooiwagen" is what I'd expect for hay wagon.

Perhaps the painter is Flemish?

* this is based solely on my knowledge of Dutch acquired from 13 years of having a Dutch partner, not any linguistic expertise

I think it is an older form of Dutch?

* based on nothing more than my 16 years living in The Netherlands ;D ;D

No , Hooi  Wagen is the right form.
There is a town in Thuringia Germany ,Suhl, with umlaut .
Perhaps he came from there  yet we know he worked  in the Delft porcelain factory  in Gouda as well as painting pictures.
Something will transpire, we could take bets!
Take our minds off B———-t.
The poser is why one lower case letter  amongst capital letters .?
And the signature on The Hay Waggon .
I am going to google  German artists,BUT  there is one with a snitchy moustache I am not interested in!

Just found a “ Landscape” by Jan Suhl, signed bottom ( our right ) right corner .
Not as stylised as the one we have been trying to sort out but definitely signed ,
J. SuHL.
I love his paintings of fowl, great big Bolshie cockerels, they have come up
whilst searching for a signature ,I like chickens,Dorkings and Rhode Island Reds ,Welsammers.Like the old Pathe News one.
Off topic sorry , :-[

Perhaps you ought to use the search term "Psycho Chicken" on this site if you want a bolshie cockerel...

Roger

I didn’t say I wanted one ,just that I like them .
Cockerels  do not need to be “psycho”- just  cockerels ,they are bolshie enough being the guardians of the farmyard especially of the hens—-THEIR hens!
Imagine a bolshie  cockerel  in a residential area!
Jan Suhl painted some lovely ones I have discovered whilst looking for a painting with his signature.

Veering wildly off topic here,  Viktoria, I used to have hens and ducks and really enjoyed them.  The cockerel was always being nagged by the hens, but at night he would sort them out and order them into the hen house.

Your reference to Psycho Chicken, Roger, reminds me that I must get in touch with 'Maggie' and ask her if she's still game for more  RC thespian excitements this winter.  It's coming up to that time of year...

I too had hens,a White Leghorn and two Gold crosses R.I Red xWhite Sussex.
Bought as day old chicks on Gent poultry market.
Sadly or maybe to my advantage they were kortegeweeked,( I hope I have remembered the spelling) in other words they had their little wings cut off!
They had never seen a hen being incubator chicks .
To keep them warm we had them in a big aquarium with a small voltage lamp up high and a feather duster suspended over.
You should have seen them fight to nestle under the duster!
We taught them to peck with a wooden skewer ,tapping it among their food.
They were hilarious as they scratched, stepped backwards to peck.
Once a rat got into their food  bin when they were fully grown , as it must have crossed their enclosure the big Leghorn   ( which looked like a cockerel)
pecked it right in between its eyes, just like a shot. Dead instantly!
I could put them to sleep by putting their heads under  what remained  of their wings, then move them round in a circle and they would stay like that until I had cleaned everything and brought their heads out and they woke up!An Old farmer taught me that.
They were lovely,pets really.
We visited the open air museum at Beamish once, ,there were some magnificent
fowl in the farmyard area.
One huge black cockerel was on a fence ,strutting along.
I can crow like a cockerel very convincingly,Wow! He did not like it at all and
flew at me feet first!
My O.H had his jacket over his arm  - flung it between me and the cockerel , gosh it was angry, but a bit confused so we skedaddled !
I wonder what I said ! ;D
Perhaps I mentioned cock a leekie  soup !
Viktoria.
P.S. What say you we do “ The Messiah “ on ice?
I have a score .
