Dorothy nee Marion or Maryan Backhurst b Q3 1888 Eastbourne
« on: Tuesday 01 October 19 12:41 BST (UK) »
The above was the daughter of Catherine Burton (previously married to George Parsons 1868) then who married William Maryan in 1878.
Dorothy married Walter Edward Waldemar Backhurst Q2 1904 at Eastbourne and had 2 children with him, Phyllis Margery b Q3 1904 and William James Edward b 16 Feb 1906; Walter passed away Q1 1909 Eastbourne.
I can't find Dorothy after the birth of William and wonder if she married again or passed away prior to 1911; her son William appears on the 1911 census living with his widowed grandmother, Esther Backhurst  and aunt Alice and her daughter, Edna, at 76 Willingdon Rd, Eastbourne. There is no sign of Phyllis either at 1911 although she did marry in 1928.

Any death or remarriage would be on freebmd - have you checked?  There is a marriage entry in 1910 which you have either missed or discounted but it's not mentioned in your post

I checked the 1910 marriage with the 1911 census but it didn't help.

That 1911 entry for her son is interesting, I wonder who actually completed it.  ::)

The 1910 marriage at Reigate of a Dorothy Backhurst was to a Percy James Ellis (not the same Percy James Ellis who married a Beatrice Katherine Frost 2 years previously).

In Mar.1915 at Eastbourne, Sussex a Dorothy Ellis bc.1889 death was registered - was she the lady who married in 1910?   Could this be your Dorothy?  Cannot see Percy J/ames Ellis with wife Dorothy on 1911 free index (only the one married to Beatrice).

I can't see Percy and Dorothy on the 1911 census either? How strange but I guess in light of your usual excellent research, Dorothy may well have married Percy in Reigate but passed  away in Eastbourne.
