Help with my brick wall?
« on: Tuesday 01 October 19 14:00 BST (UK) »
Hi All, I’ve just become a member of RootsChat, recommended by a distant relative I’ve found via Ancestry. Lots of great reading and advice here.

My brick wall is similar to many and I’m not sure where to begin. I’m looking to find out who my grandfather was. My maternal grandmother was English, born 1905 and sailed with two other single young women to Australia (Melb) in mid 1925. I can find no records of where she worked or lived before 1930. In 1927, she had a daughter (my aunt) and in 1929 had a second daughter (my mother), both are deceased. My mother and her sisters birth certs only state my grandmother’s name, father’s name is blank. In 1930 my grandmother shows up in census records and I understand she was hired by a farmer and his son in country Victoria and in 1931 my g/mother and that son were married (and eventually had six more children). Any ideas as to where to begin? Family members were kept in the dark on details but were aware that the first two children were illegitimate.
Many thanks if you’ve read to the end of this post - also if you have any hints.
My grandmother’s name was DORIS MAUDE GOSTAGE, my Aunt MAUD DORIS GOSTAGE and my mother PATRICIA MURIEL GOSTAGE.

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

I can't help with Australian records, but for starters:

Doris Maude Gostage was registered in West Derby (Liverpool) Registration District in September quarter 1905, and using our GRO facility, her mother's maiden name was Roberts.

Added:  Baptism at St Chad, Everton - 19 October 1905

Doris Maud - daughter of Arthur (Barman) and Maud, 121 Robson Street.  Born 18 June 1905.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Were your mother and aunt baptized?, the reputed father may be listed.
Were they born in a maternity home?, admitting registers can have clues.
Who reported the births your grandmother or someone else?
If the fathers name was not on the birth certificate then you may never know. Try a DNA test and see who you match up with.

From that birth registration, there is a marriage registered in West Derby - September quarter 1902 between Arthur Gostage and Maud Roberts.

And this is the 1911 census entry for Doris Maud
