Help please finding James Robinson
« on: Tuesday 01 October 19 15:22 BST (UK) »
I've had this brickwall for years and just decided to have another crack at it but I don't have much to go on, so a fresh pair of eyes but be appreciated.

My 2x gt grandfather was William Robinson born in 1812 to James Robinson & Ann.
William married 3 times,  I'm not sure who is 1st wife was but he married my 2 x gt grandmother,
Elizabeth Simpson in 1846 at St John the baptist. On this marriage certificate it states his father
James was a Gardiner. William married again at the grand old age of 76 and on that certificate
states his father was James, a dissenting minister.  I can only tract one surviving sibling for         William and that was Selina born 1810 and she married James Clarke in 1840 and father was given as James who was a Hawker.  So I only have 3 clues about James Robinson.  In 1840 he was a Hawker and in 1846 was a gardener and at some stage in his life was a dissenting Minister.

Any suggestion would be great.

Thanks
Carol

I suspect you'll have these details, Sunfower, but in the spirit of completeness:

is this James' and Ann's marriage:
1803 03 20   James ROBINSON and Ann DIXON @NOTTINGHAM St Mary

However there is another James/Ann marriage:
1807 03 07   James ROBINSON and Ann Arabella FERGUSON  @ NOTTINGHAM St Mary

To James and Ann were baptised the following children, all at St Mary's:

   1804 02 07      Ann
   1806 04 17      James
   1808 12 31      Henry
   1810 11 02      Selina
   1811 12 13      Edmund
   1812 12 07      William

then between 1813 - 1829 there are several more children, and for these the father's occ is given, as well as the address:

   1813 01 07      Mary            Victualler           Butchers Close
1814 06 25      Thomas    Brick Maker   Butchers Close
   1819 08 11      Daniel    Wharfinger   Butcher's Close
   1827 06 08      George    Wharfinger   Butchers Close
   1829 03 15      John            Labourer           Poynton St

To potentially add to the confusion, the mother's name is given as Ann Arabella for other baptisms, so that clearly delineates that these children belong to the second marriage above, but ofcourse others could also belong if the Arabella wasn't always added!

James and Ann Arabella's children:
1811 06 08      James
1816 12 02      Daniel       Wharfinger   Brewer St
1818 05 17      Martha       Wharfinger   Butcher St
1821 01 16      George Thomas   Wharfinger   Wharf St
1822 04 07      Ann                   Wharfinger   Wharf St

and probably:

1815 10 05      Arabella             Warfinger   Brewer St   (mother's name just Arabella). Clearly with the addresses and paternal occupation, there's overlap with the second list of children above.

There's another James/Ann marriage during thse years:
1827 08 07   James William ROBINSON  and  Ann SAVAGE   @ NOTTINGHAM St Nicholas
so I wonder if John, b 1829, belongs to this couple with the address and occ being different.

There's also some deaths which may be to one of these families:
1807 02 08   Millicent ROBINSON    Dau of James
1812 09 23   Henry   ROBINSON   Son of James
Bradbury (Sedgeley, Bilston, Warrington)
Cooper (Sedgeley, Bilston)
Kilner/Kilmer (Leic, Notts)
Greenfield (Liverpool)
Holyland (Anywhere and everywhere, also Holiland Holliland Hollyland)
Pryce/Price (Welshpool, Liverpool)
Rawson (Leicester)
Upton (Desford, Leics)
Partrick (Vera and George, Leicester)
Marshall (Westmorland, Cheshire/Leicester)

The 1841 census in Nottingham has a JamesRobinson age55, cola merchant, living on Wharf St with a son called JamesJnr (allegedly age 25) -- so with the address and occupation, I imagine that this is Arabella's family.

burial at St Mary:

1840 02 11   Ann Arrabella  ROBINSON       age 53    abode Skinner St
Bradbury (Sedgeley, Bilston, Warrington)
Cooper (Sedgeley, Bilston)
Kilner/Kilmer (Leic, Notts)
Greenfield (Liverpool)
Holyland (Anywhere and everywhere, also Holiland Holliland Hollyland)
Pryce/Price (Welshpool, Liverpool)
Rawson (Leicester)
Upton (Desford, Leics)
Partrick (Vera and George, Leicester)
Marshall (Westmorland, Cheshire/Leicester)

Sunflower, how sure can you be that your William was the s/o James and Ann?

ON the FHS disc there are 2 Williams baptised at St Mary around the same time, father James:

1812 12 07   William - parents      James   ROBINSON and Ann   (as above)
1814 10 03   William - parents      James   ROBINSON and Elisabeth; this James was a Shop Keeper,of Barker Gate.

I know that doesn't fit with the occupations you have, but I can't see any James Robinson as a gardener or as a minister.

Have you looked at any non-con records, if James was a dissenting minister?
