JOSEPH PENNINGTON and ANN ENTWISTLE - m. 1841 - Missing Father
« on: Tuesday 01 October 19 16:44 BST (UK) »
Joseph Pennington was born in Little Lever, near Bolton, probably in 1816. He married Ann Entwistle (1821-1891) on 22 Aug 1841 at St. Mary the Virgin Church in Prestwich. Unfortunately his father is not named on the certificate. I have not been able to locate the 1841 Census for Joseph, nor can I find the 1871 Census for himself and Ann Entwistle and their family (the 1851 & 1861 Censuses show they lived in Kiln Lane, Little Lever and Joseph worked as a carpenter. Ann was widowed before 1881, but I do not know for certain when Joseph died.

I am appealing for help - does anybody know the name of Joseph's parents (I am now convinced they are NOT Joseph Pennington and Jane Pugh)? Unfortunately his marital record probably suggests that Joseph was illegitimate, but, if so, does anyone know his mother's name or if he was baptised?

Can anyone advise on the missing 1841 & 1871 Censuses, and does anyone know exactly when Joseph died?

Any and all help appreciated. If I can't find any more information on Joseph then I fear I've come to an end with my tree!

No, I wasn't aware of this one. It sounds very significant, although his likely birth date (presumably about Oct/Nov 1814) is a couple of years earlier than the inferred birth date from the 1851 & 1861 Censuses (I appreciate these are often a bit inaccurate). Thanks for the tip.
