Finding birth records for travelling performers??
« on: Wednesday 02 October 19 19:20 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I know my great great grandfather Richard Edwards Noble was a travelling minstrel and had children all around England, but the ones who were born whilst he was still a minstrel have no GRO birth indexes or records I can find - same for Richard's marriage certificate.

Is there any reason why births, marriages or deaths would not be recorded for travellers? Or are they recorded somewhere separate? Currently I have records for his later children, but not for his eldest 3.

I am aware that he married Elizabeth Bielby in Scarborough (his hometown) in 1897.
According to the 1911 Census their kids were;

- Gladys Noble, born abt 1898 in Scarborough,
- Nora Noble, born abt 1900 in Blackpool,
- Richard Noble, born abt 1902 in Colwyn Bay, Wales
(They also had a fourth child who died before 1911, who's name I do not know)

These are the three who's birth index I cannot find anywhere, along with Richard and Elizabeth's marriage index. I also can't find him at all on the 1901 Census, but his wife and eldest kids Gladys and Nora are boarding in Herefordshire - likely on their way to Wales.

Wondering if their births were even recorded at all whilst on the road. Any advice welcome!
Many thanks,

Ali

Welcome to Rootschat. How do you know that they actually married in 1897?

Births should be recorded where the birth took place, but perhaps if they moved soon after the birth they forgot.

There is a birth of a Gladys Noble registered in York in 1898, no mother's maiden name given.

Gertrude could be the child mentioned who died before 1911.

Deaths Mar Q 1911  Middlesbro  9d 370
Gertrude Noble
Age 5

I see the family were in this area in 1911
Robbins - Wolverhampton.
Spooner - Monmouthshire & Wolverhampton.
Warner & Loundes - Dudley/West Bromwich.
Dod(g)son - Heysham/Liverpool/Wolverhampton

Thank you thank you thank you so much for these! These will most definitely be the kids, and yes Gertrude seems the most likely candidate for the child who died before the 1911 Census.

Thank you so much!!! You all are marvellous  :)
