Frank Dickinson
« on: Monday 07 October 19 12:48 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I posted a question in the New Zealand section a couple of weeks ago asking for information regarding Francis Dickinson, born in Wangaroa, Northland, NZ, on the 20th of Feb 1884.

I believe he eventually made his way to Australia and possibly married Lily Violet Lobelia Stark in Sydney, 1904. I say ‘possibly’ because the information recorded in their marriage certificate doesn’t quite match the information I was expecting to see. It does state that Frank was born in Wangaroa, NZ which is fine, but it says that his parent's names were Frank Dickinson and Elizabeth (no maiden name given). This doesn't quite match as Francis’ parents were Abel Dickinson and Elizabeth Sinclair. It also states that his age in 1904 was 27 yrs, however, according to Frances’ birth certificate he would have only been about 20 yrs of age. I have attached the Birth cert and Marriage cert below. I don’t have Franks death cert but the following site claims that his parents are also listed as Frank and Elizabeth: https://mclemoregenealogy.org/getperson.php?personID=I8656&tree=McLemore

This is confusing as an In Memorium was posted in the SMH on the 1st of Feb 1915 for a Mr. Abraham (Abel) Dickinson who died in NZ a year earlier on the 1st of Feb 1914. The message was from his loving son and daughter-in-law Lanty(???) and Lillie. Here is the link to said message: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/15554870

Additionally, an In Memorium for Frank published in the SMH on the 24th Oct 1940, refers to him as Alonzo ‘Frank’ Dickinson. Francis had an older brother called Alonzo born in 1868 so might it be him instead? Here is the link to the In Memorium:
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/17705648

Anyway, can somebody help me figure out whether Francis Dickinson is, in fact, Alonzo ‘Frank’ Dickinson? Or if Alonzo ‘Frank’ Dickinson is potentially Francis’ older brother?

Sorry for the long post

Hi

It seems to me the Memoriam notice in 1915 that said Lanty was obviously by Frank and Lily.

This is the funeral notice in October 1937...........
DICKINSON.-The Relatives and Friends of Mrs. LILY DICKINSON and FAMILY are Invited to attend the Funeral of her dear HUSBAND and their FATHER. Alonzo Frank........................

NSW marriages from 1856 were subject to both civil and religious practices, and civil law and, from 1899, huge fines for perjury.  HOWEVER,  ... in the 1900s decade, there was no requirement for the clergy to inspect formal proof of ID .... and conversely, no  requirement for the bride or groom to pause and read through and comprehend all the handwriting on the church register BEFORE signing the certificate when marrying... some clergy may well have completed it AFTER the ceremony,  or even when getting their records ready to submit to their local civil deputy registrar generals office.

Being aged 21 and over meant the groom was old enough to give his own consent to marry.

The mclemoregenealogy.org site says

Researcher Miora Freeman's great grandfather was named Allen Dickinson. The birth certificate of Allen Dickerson , born 22 June 1879 in Whangaroa, New Zealand lists Elizabeth Linkley and Abel Dickinson as parents.

In the 1884 birth certificate for Francis Dickinson that you have linked for download, the mother's maiden name reads as Linkley (not Sinclair)

M

ADD - looking at it again it could be Sinkley, which sounds much closer to Sinclair
