18th Hussars c.1904
« on: Monday 07 October 19 15:05 BST (UK) »
Please, before I reach insanity stage, can anyone point me in the right direction. Postcard has been handed down through generations but no-one seems to know who he was. There appears to be an impressed mark that looks like 1904 in top right corner. I have looked through lots of sites but cannot work out if the SSM are his initials or are something to do with Military Rank. Can someone please shed light on this card and end a family argument.

Presumably Squadron Sergeant Major Batchelor.

Where did the 18th Hussars bit come from? Is there an inscription on the back of the card?

Hi Christopher and welcome to Rootschat...I can't see a postmark.

It's on the back of the postcard Shaun, 2nd image.

Thanks Carol - I didn't see the second image!

Sergeant Major Batchelor of 18th Hussars was still alive in August 1905  - in a shooting competition at Strensall. (Sheffield Daily Telegraph 12 August 1905 - page 8).

There is a South Africa medal record for 3854  Squadron Q.M. Sergeant G Batchelor  18th Hussars.

Christopher,  there may not be a family connection to the deceased. The key message seems to be that the funeral cortège is pictured in "my street - where we live".
