Private Samuel Holland
« on: Tuesday 08 October 19 15:34 BST (UK) »
During a planned archaeological dig in 2016 on the western side of the village of St Julien, archaeologists discovered several sets of human remains and artefacts. There is a list of possible casualties and MOD Detectives are looking for their families in the hope that they will be willing to provide DNA for comparison

Private Samuel Holland – Royal Fusiliers. Pte Holland was killed in action on 16 August 1917. Aside from knowing his service number (G/10053) and that he served with the 2nd battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. Little is known so far  ???

Hi Sandra, This is one of those that you wish you could close for someone. I for my opinion believe Samuel to be the son of Peter Holland and Sarah Ann Wakefield. They appear to have had 9 children with mmn Wakefield pre 1911 with 8 still alive by that date. A good contender though as we know certification is a must, there is a marriage J Q 1914 Wolstanton ( covers Kidsgrove) of a Samuel Holland & Florence E James. I will try later to attempt to follow Samuel's siblings. With regard to Fold 3, are you using Ancestry to access that document as I cannot find it on their records.

John

Staffordshire Sentinel of September 10th 1917 has a KIA notice for a Corporal Samuel Holland, son of a Mr & Mrs Peter Holland, 18 Victoria Street, Kidsgrove. Samuel had previously worked at Birchenwood Colliery.

Same address as the 1911 census for Samuel Holland where he was a lamp cleaner (above ground)
