Whitby???  (A shot in the dark for me too!).  Could be the forerunner of the Pavilion & Spa

I think this is correct. Curve of the coast line seems familiar, could be harbour arm pier in the background on the extreme left. Cliff height roughly what I remember from childhood holidays.

See this picture and imagine it from the beach perspective; the 'modern' (now gone) building in the foreground, the Victorian red-brick one (which still exists) in the background.

I got curious about this building based on the various pictures I've seen. There is surprisingly little written history online, but it looks like it was built sometime between 1923 and 1925, based on these two pics:

https://www.francisfrith.com/whitby/whitby-the-zig-zag-path-1923_74302

https://www.francisfrith.com/whitby/whitby-the-spa-1925_77716

A couple of pages mention the current replacement structure as having been built in the 1980s, but not the demise of its predecessor. Good shot of the present-day site here:

My childhood holidays in Whitby were in the late '70s and early '80s. We often stayed in a flat on Royal Crescent, so the zig-zag path was the quickest route to the beach. I have a vague memory of 'interesting dereliction' in this area, though I couldn't say whether I'm remembering an old building, a demolition, or even a building site.

Hi, everybody,
First, a big 'thank you' for your contributions - I am extremely grateful.
My apologies for the delay in saying this - I am currently in the US so there's a 6 hours time difference.
I could not see the similarities in Whitby at first and then I noticed the small white hut and the larger building with two points (see attached picture).
So, Whitby it is ! And absolutely nowhere near Westcliff-on Sea...
Thank you and best wishes.
