Displaced Persons, Bremen-Grohn (Bremen), Germany
« on: Thursday 10 October 19 17:21 BST (UK) »
Hello

Thanks to Ancestry I found  my wife's great grandfather at a Passenger Lists of Displaced Persons, 1946-1971.
He received a passport on 8 Apr 1949 in resettlement camp Butzbach. He emigrated  to Mattawan, Michigan, USA from Bremen-Grohn (Bremen), Germany on 13 Apr 1949.
Apparently it is document from Arolsen Archives.
Is there anything else I can find having now this information? Would his passport application be still kept in German archives? What was a resettlement camp in Butzbach?

Many thanks.

Nope. He was Lithuanian. After WWII and subsequent occupation of the Lithuania  by the Soviets he fled to US. Prior to this he must have spent few years in Germany as we think he fled the Soviets in 1946.

Hi

Did you look at Arolsen Archives? Maybe they have some more documents.
https://arolsen-archives.org/suchen-erkunden/suche-online-archiv/

The resettlement camp Butzbach was some sort of displaced peoples camp.
http://www.dpcamps.org/dpcampsGermanyBR.html

If you search on google you will find more information about the resettlement camp Butzbach.

Svenja- Many thanks. It seems Arolsen and Ancestry have some cooperation . I found there another document from Bremen-Grohn - transport by ship:

https://collections.arolsen-archives.org/en/search/people/81658624/?p=1&s=Montvydas&s_lastName=asc

The one I found on Ancestry seems to be Butzbach: transport by airplane. This is odd. So how did he finally arrived to US- by plane or ship?
Also he seemed to had a sponsor: NCWC FR.Ryan. What does it mean?
