I have traced my family back to a Marshall Mitchell who was the father of John Mitchell, my grandfather. Here's what I have:
John Mitchell born 6 September 1885 in Prahran, Melbourne (first attached birth certificate:)
Parents: Marshall (bricklayer) aged 32 years old, born in London; Annie aged 31, born in Liverpool.
Marshall and Annie married 7 April 1877 in Prahran, Melbourne.
Only two children named Marshall Mitchell born in England on the GRO records the period 1849 to 1855:
Marshall Mitchell born 29 July 1849 (second attached birth certificate)
(GRO Reference: 1849 S Quarter in EAST LONDON UNION Volume 02 Page 197; mother's maiden name Anderson). Certificate gives address as 29 Artillery Lane, Bishops Gate
Marshall Mitchell born 1852
(GRO Reference: 1852 M Quarter in BASFORD Volume 07B Page 112; mother's maiden name Rigley)
The unassisted migrant passenger list site records only one Marshall Mitchell arriving in Melbourne in the period 1853 - 1876 - left England 16 November 1853 on the Asiatic; arrived Port Phillip March 1854. Passenger list records Marshall as aged 3 years but mother as Sarah (aged 36). Siblings are Emma (12), Robert (

, John (5), and Francis (1). No male adult Mitchell on the passenger list.
My problems: John's birth certificate clearly records Marshall's age as 32, which would give his birth year as 1852/3 in London, but that is not seen in the GRO records.
Marshall's birth certificate records his mother's name as Emma but the only female adult Mitchell who came out on the same ship as Marshall is named Sarah.
I don't see any point in getting the birth certificate of the Marshal Mitchell from Basford because it is so far from London and the mother's maiden name is wrong.
If there is anyone who can help me to solve this conundrum I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks,
Peter
