Mary Jane Murphy - The search for her birth record
« on: Friday 11 October 19 10:41 BST (UK) »
Mary Jane was a friend's grandmother, born 20th Feb 1893? in Enneskillen, Co. Fermanagh. She has been trying for many years to find her birth record without success.

What we have so far.  She said that her parents were James Murphy & Margaret (nee Cullen)

Mary married William McGinnes, from Scotland, in Belfast St Peters R C Church, 1915

We have found a Mary Jane Murphy in the 1911 census as an 18 yo servant in the Fermanagh area &
a Mary Jane Hoy, stepdaughter, age 9  with a James Murphy, age 33 & Margaret, age 29 on the 1901 census for Enneskillen.

Can anyone please help to find her birth record.

Note that the town is Enniskillen.

There is a marriage of John James Murphy, widower and Margaret Cullen, Spinster -1899
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1899/10370/5775441.pdf

This probably accounts for son William Murphy in 1901 census

Mary Jane Hoy shows as born in Leitrim .

That looks promising, Heywood. Its the Mary Jane Hoy, stepdaughter, that is confusing. Margaret is shown as a spinster in their wedding????

I was looking at this earlier and wonder if Stepdaughter is another of these vague relationships people put on the census.
I had a nephew to head of household in a census who turned out to be the son of the brother of a brother in law of the wife of the household.
Mary Jane could be a relation they have taken in and reared as their own, assuming she is the same person who later calls herself Mary Jane Murphy.
Or could she be Margaret's daughter and at this point using her father's surname but birth registered as Cullen. I didn't see any Hoy that would suit in Leitrim but didn't look for a Cullen.

Not having any look finding a birth to suit that idea either.

Thanks for your efforts, Sinann. Bit of a mystery! perhaps John James's late wife had been married before to a Hoy.

If I have the correct birth than William's mother was Agnes Lougheed
Married James in 1880
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1880/11034/8035100.pdf
William born 1884
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1884/02691/1991029.pdf
Agnes died 1885

They could have earlier children, could Mary Jane be James' grand daughter! Could be pushing it a bit there.

James would have been 13 in 1880.
