Location of a street in Charlestown
« on: Friday 11 October 19 20:03 BST (UK) »
I’m trying to locate a street in Charlestown that appears on an 1871 census. It’s called “Captains Row”. I’ve looked on some old maps and can’t find it so either I’m missing it or it isn’t marked on a map. I have a rough idea where it is as “Captains House” appears in amongst the houses listed on Captains Row.

Presumably you have also looked for streets either side of Captain's Row on the census, and then found them on the map.
Little rows frequently are not named on maps.

Charlestwon was a confined to a really small area around the harbour then.  Looking at the census pages the Post Office seems to be at one end of the row and it mentions the Custom House.  These were at either end of a row of building that included the Rashleigh Arms Hotel.  The Customs House and the Post Office is marked on this 1881 map

It may be this row of houses.  Duck Street - also preceding the area in the 1871 census - is the street behind this row of houses.  Going further on, you get the Shipwright's Yard and Quayside so that would be closer to the harbour.  The buildings looking directly at the inner basin of the harbour were part of the coastguard station.

Here's that row today .. https://goo.gl/maps/ihVojdYJXt5LyfvCA      Sorry it's not possible to get closer to the row of houses than this with Streetview.   I will be in Charlestown in a couple of weeks.  If you give me some specific instructions I can take photos etc for you.

Thanks for the help. I’ve think I’ve managed to locate where the family were living.

greenrig - thank you for offering to take some photos. I’ve attached a map of Charlestown from 1882. Hopefully you can read the writing.

1871 - MARKED WITH BLUE ARROW. I have no idea which house the family were living in only that it was Captains Row which is now part of Quay Road. Any photos of the street looking towards the Custom House would be great.
1881 - MARKED WITH RED ARROW. This was the easiest house to find. The house is on Quay Road overlooking the harbour. It’s now a holiday home https://www.antoniaspearls.co.uk/property.php?id=11  a photo of the house would be good but if possible could you stand in front of the house, turn around and take a picture of the view of the inner basin.
1891 - The house was in the same street as the one in 1871. As the census listed the Charlestown Hotel then my relative’s house I’m assuming the hotel was the Rashleigh Arms and the house would be next to it.

In Charlestown now ( having a  pint in Rashleigh actually).  I have taken good photos of both your requests.  Will PM you at weekend with results.
