Wiiliam Wilson
« on: Saturday 12 October 19 11:47 BST (UK) »
I am looking for birth details of William Wilson born 1882. He married Sarah Thomlinson  July 27th 1905 in Aspatria, he was 23 years old, he gives his father's name as Isaac Wilson farm servant. in 1911 census he is living in Aspatria with his 2nd wife also called Sarah, (first wife died in 1906) He states he was born 1882 in Hesket New Market. I think I have found him living in Westward parish with Michael & Esther Holt as a boarder, birth details 1882 Hesket New Market. Now it gets confusing he is living with Michael & Esther in 1891 census but listed as a son. In 1911 census Michael & Esther list they have 2 children their daughters Janet & Georgina. Probably just a coincidence but Esther (Halliburton) was also born in Hesket New Market. In 1901 census William's occupation is Freestone Quarryman which is also the occupation listed on his marriage certificate in 1905. I have found a birth of a William Wilson to a Bridget Wilson in Caldbeck in 1882 which I Hesket New Market would come under. All this seems a bit confusing, can anyone make any sense of it please?

Esther married Michael in 1873 nearly 10 years before William was born. Hesket New Market is near Caldbeck in cumbria.
Thanks I will have a look though.

Caldbeck comes under the Wigton registration district.  If William was definitely born in 1882 then there are two possible births.

WILSON, WILLIAM       -

WILSON, WILLIAM       WILLS
GRO Reference: 1882  D Quarter in WIGTON  Volume 10B  Page 499

Is his surname definitely Wilson?

Yes his surname is definitely Wilson, I did check The Wills one and ruled it out, cannot remember why now, he is a bit of a puzzle. He was still alive in 1939 but I cannot find him in 1939 register, his granddaughter remembers him living in Carlisle when she was younger.

Was this the baptism that you found?

Name:
William Wilson living and christened at Caldbeck, Cumberland

Christening Date:   22 Jan 1882

Mother's Name:
Bridget Wilson

Then this birth registration that I found earlier is highly likely to be his.

WILSON, WILLIAM       -
GRO Reference: 1882  M Quarter in WIGTON  Volume 10B  Page 487

A dash means that the child is illegitimate.  You can get a pdf from the GRO for £7.  I would be inclined to get the birth cert to see what address is given as place of birth.

Have you attempted to find a Bridget Wilson in the 1881 census?

Playing about with names there is a Mary Bridget Wilson who marries an Isaac Brackwell who was an ag lab born Cumberland in 1881 census.

Bridget possibly a servant at a farm in 1881.

Marriage 1887 Isaac was 22 she was 31.  Maybe they waited to marry until he was over 21.

Thinking William put Isaac as his father but changed surname to Wilson to match his own.

Bridget Brackwell dies in 1890 Penrith age 35 so if she was the mother of William would explain why he was with other "parents" in 1891.

Just a long shot to check out  :)

Should it be her there is a nice family tree with photos of Bridget and Isaac on.

No mention of William Wilson of course.
