Geddes/McNeil marriage 1915
« on: Sunday 13 October 19 13:44 BST (UK) »
I am a bit curious regarding the marriage of my grandfather & step grandmother George Geddes (1887 - 1971)& Christina McNeil (1886 - 1964) on 13 February 1915 at Perth, Perthshire.
George gives his usual address as Portessie, Buckie, Banffshire & Christina gives her usual address as Scorna- Druiden ? Barra, Inverness.
It just seems strange that they were from different parts of the country & were married so far from their homes.
Does anyone have any ideas why, also is there anyone who is researching either of these people.

He was a Cooper (Batchelor) living in Portessie Buckie in 1911 & on his marriage.
She was a Housekeeper (Spinster) not quite sure about 1911.
Both sets of parents were deceased.

Did Christina give the names of her parents on marriage?

Is this her baptism;

MCNEIL CHRISTINA
DONALD MCNEIL/CHRISTINA MCNEIL (Parents)
4/3/1885 (Birth)
5/3/1885 (Baptism)
Craigston, Barra, St Brendan's

Is it possible to post a snip with the Barra place name please with surrounding text for comparison as there's no place of that name to my knowledge?

"It just seems strange that they were from different parts of the country & were married so far from their homes"

This wasn't unusual as there was no work on the islands.

Crofting/Farming & Fishing were the main jobs.

I have many islanders who went to the mainland for work & subsequently married there.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Her parents were Michael Macneil Fisherman Deceased & Mary Maclean deceased. Possibly married 2 Feb 1874 St. Brendans, Craigston, Barra.
Attached (hopefully) is a part of the marriage Cert.

It does exist. See https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3186728

Forfarian, I must be missing something as I can't find "Scorna- Druiden"?
