William & Elizabeth Slater of Retford and Kneesall - deaths/burials?
« on: Sunday 13 October 19 17:19 BST (UK) »
Hello,

This is another part of my tree where I thought I had everything right but a new document found shows me I was wrong.

William Slater married Elizabeth Taylor in 1781 in Kneesall, Notts. They had two daughters, Elizabeth, b. 1783 (Kneesall) and Sarah, b. 1786 (Weston).

William Slater had been indentured to his future father-in-law, William Taylor, miller, a few years prior.

I had thought that William Slater died in 1789 in Weston, as there is a burial in that year. There is also a burial of an Elizabeth Slater in Weston in 1827 in Weston, abode of Kneesall, perfect age to be William's widow.

However, I just found a will of William Slater of East Retford, dated Oct 1809 (proved 1810), which is definitely the right William Slater (it notes his wife, daughters, grandchildren, brother-in-law). The will notes land at Clarborough and Ordsall. It looks like William died in Oct 1809, a death notice in the Stamford Mercury on 3 Nov 1809 reads: "On Saturday se’nnight, Mr. William Slater, bailiff, of Retford."

I cannot find a burial for William Slater at Retford - can anyone find where he was buried? I'm hoping that it will give an age which may help to track down his parents.

Also I'm not sure now whether the burial for Elizabeth I have is correct. It is possible she remarried after William's death.

Any help sorting this out is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Alexander

There's nothing for William Slater on my FHS disc. Looking at the places you mention, the only thing that might even be possible is the burial of a William SADLER in Clarborough (abode Clarborough) on 7 Dec -- I suppose it's possible, if the writing on the PRs is terrible, that this is a mistranscription, but I don't think that a body would be left unburied for that long in those days anyway.

There's no age given for William Sadler, but it does note that he was "William senr".

Do you know what became of William's children? Maybe there's a family grave plot somewhere? What were their names, and where/when did they die, so far as you know?

Hi Annie, thanks for looking, I don't think that William Sadler is my man but can't rule it out completely.

William Slater and his wife Elizabeth (Taylor) had two daughters, Elizabeth and Sarah.

Elizabeth Slater (b. 1781 at Kneesall). Elizabeth had three illegitimate children:
 - Ann, b. 1803 at Kneesall
 - Henry, b. 1809 at East Retford
 - William, b. 1813 at Norwell
Went on to marry Thomas Wilson in 1822 at Norwell, by whom three more children:
 - Elizabeth, b. 1822 at Norwell
 - Sarah, b. c.1824 at Norwell
 - Thomas, b. 1828 at Tuxford
Elizabeth died in 1871 at Norwell and was buried there. There is a headstone. When I was in the churchyard I do not remember seeing any Slater headstones nearby.

Sarah Slater (b. 1783 at Weston).
Married Thomas Templeman in 1815 at Norwell.
Had 10 children, all born at Norwell: William (1815), Thomas (1816), Mary (1819), George (1820), James (1821), Ann (1824), Joseph (1825), Joseph (1826), John (1827), Henry (c.1828).
Sarah died in 1870 at Southwell but was buried at Norwell.

So clearly the family had ties to Norwell but this appears to be after William's death.

Maybe the family moved to Norwell whilst the girls still lived at home, since Elizabeth had a child there, and then both sisters married there.

There are no Slater burials in Norwell on the disc.

Looking harder, I don't think William Sadler was anything to do with the Slaters as there are other Sadler events at Clarborough, so it wasn't just one dodgily written entry!

I looked at the FHS flashdrive and there are no burials at Weston between 1804 and 1813.
I don't know if this means there were no burials in this time period, or if the records are missing or illegible or just not transcribed.
I am particularly interested since William was my 4ggrandfather.

Hi Liz, which of William's children are you related to?

Well spotted that there were no burials transcribed for Weston in 1809. I wonder if anyone going to the Nottingham Archives can check whether there are any burial registers for that year.

Thanks,
Alexander

I am related through Sarah Slater who married Thomas Templeman. their son Thomas had a daughter Sarah Elizabeth who was my ggrandmother.
Do you have the will of William Slater or the precis, which I obtained through the National Archives.

Hi Liz,

I have a copy of the will, if you would like I can send it to you by email?
