Some success today. :)

Took a look at Weston All Saints' monumental inscriptions today and found:

Quote
Slater, William died 24 Oct 1809 aged 49.
also Elizabeth wife died 25 Sep 1827 aged 71.

This confirms the death dates for William and Elizabeth, and that the burial for Elizabeth is the correct one. Also got an age now for William, which may be helpful to track his baptism.

So it looks like William was probably buried at Weston. Will need to take a look at Weston PRs for 1809 as it looks like that year was omitted from the Notts FHS burial indexes. Also worth a trip to Weston at some point to see if I can find the headstone.

There are 4 baptisms on the FHS disc for a William Slater between 1753- 1765. I think that should actually only be 3 baptisms as one appears to be duplicated with a slightly different date ?transcription error.

Thanks Annie. The Sutton and Worksop ones are a bit far out if the death age of 49 (i.e. b. c. 1760) is accurate (which there is no guarantee). However a birth date of 1760 fits well will him being being apprenticed in 1776.

There is a William Slater buried in Weston in 1789, no other Slaters that I see apart from Elizabeth in 1827. Pure conjecture but I do wonder if this could be William's father.

Of course, he may not have been born in Notts. All I know is he turned up in Kneesall in 1776 when he was made apprentice.

The William Slater who was buried in Weston in 1789 doesn't have a recorded age of death. However, it is recorded that he was "an honest man"!

One baptism I do have to investigate further is:

Mansfield St Peter & St Paul
11 Oct 1760, William, s. of William & Sarah Slayter

Three reasons I like this one - date seems spot on, father name William (could be the one who died at Weston) and mother Sarah (he named his first daughter after his wife and mother-in-law, second daughter was Sarah).

"slayter" seems to be a variation of the name peculiar to Mansfield (or probably to the rector there). There are 7 "Slayter" baptisms there between 1737 - 1760, and none anywhere else.

The one you mention is the only one for William and Sarah and there are no other notes on the transcription.

Marriage: 1758 10 26   William   SLAYTER    and Sarah   SMITH    at MANSFIELD St Peter and St Paul

There are 2 more Slater baptisms there for William and Sarah - Thomas, in 1763,and Betsy, in 1771. Betsy (or Bessy) died in 1773.

Following the baptism in the previous post, I  see that Sarah Slater, age 46, wife of William was buried at Mansfield in 1781. No sign of a burial at Mansfield for William so could tend to support that he was buried elsewhere such as Weston.

I see the daughter Betsy/Bessy was buried in 1773 at Mansfield.

Will try to see if I can trace the son Thomas at all.

All still very much a guess but it seems to fit so far.

Just checked the Notts Archives catalogue again and there are a large number of documents that are on there now, that I'm sure were not there previously. Large number about the Slaters. Does seem to support the Mansfield baptism.
