Thomas WATERWORTH - Death in Johannesburg
« on: Tuesday 15 October 19 00:20 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have recently found an old scratch piece of paper that belonged to my grandmother (Olive GOODALL, née MUNDAY) with what I hope are the details of her uncle’s death. Unfortunately, I have not been able to confirm it via several on-line databases.

Would someone with more experience with South African research be able to verify and confirm his death for me?

Thomas WATERWORTH
b.   ?   New Zealand/Australia
m.  ?
d.   9 October 1955   Johannesburg, South Africa

I do not know when he left New Zealand/Australia or why he went to South Africa.

He had two sisters:
Agnes WATERWORTH born in Gore, New Zealand; and
Elizabeth “Eliza” Ann WATERWORTH possibly also born in New Zealand.

I believe he may have been single when he died and lived in a boarding house.  Perhaps my grandmother Olive GOODALL née MUNDAY was his next of kin?

Thank you for your assistance.

Hello Tree Spirit,

Thank you so very much for locating the death information of my 2nd Great Uncle.  Just goes to show you shouldn’t throw out random pieces of paper with scribble and dates!!!  This was my only clue and my grandmother was correct.

Would you like to have a stab at the Birthplace and Nationality of the Deceased?  It looks like:

       “Manchester - Union Matrenal“

It certainly doesn’t sound like somewhere in New Zealand or Australia.

This information you found for me is the ONLY concrete evidence I have found on the three siblings (well, the three that I know of!!)

Best regards.

Wendy

1861 census:

- On 7 April 1861 (census day), Eilza was 21 days, so she would have been born in March 1861
- Thomas sr was a joiner ... this might be have something to do with Thomas jr having been a carpenter.
- Dad Thomas was 37, so born abt 1823 in Preston
- Mum Sarah was 31, so born abt 1829 in Bedford.
- Agnes and Eliza were also born in Bedford. That corresponds with the birth info I’d given before as Bedford was in reg district Leigh.
- Elizabeth wasn't mentioned on the census

Hi Tree Spirit,

"Would you like to have a stab at the Birthplace and Nationality of the Deceased?"  A stab in this sense means, would you like to have a go or an attempt to work out the Birthplace and Nationality.  It's a colloquialism from my homeland.

Thank you very much for your time, assistance and advice in helping me take a step further in solving this mystery.

Best regards.

LOL, that is so funny ... I wondered for a while whether you had a problem with the siblings' UK births (instead of NZ births) and then I realised you'd responded to the "My stab?" I was a being a bit ironic as my conclusions had been a bit more than a just a little stab ....

I hope you'll enjoy having a new direction with your research .....
