Hello,
Please forgive me if I am posting in the wrong place but I wondered if you could share your tips for determining who your ancestor is likely to be if there are more than one person born with the same name in a similar time frame please?
My ancester in question is Richard Millerchip, his daughter Ann Millerchip/Millership baptised 1796 Bedworth, married Samuel Lane in 1819 in Wolverhampton. Ann was baptised to Richard and Elizabeth Millerchip. The only relevant marriage I can find for a Richard Millerchip and Elizabeth is to Elizabeth Barkby in Exhall nr Bedworth 1787.
The trouble is finding the right Richard out of these 3:
1) Richard Millichamp baptised 1753 Bedworth to Thomas and Ann - this one is on 20 other ancestry.co.uk trees (most are filled from other trees rather than having supporting docs) and they think this one married Elizabeth Barkby, he could have been in his 30s. Thomas and Ann have 9 other children so stay in the area. They are baptised as Millichamp, Millechamp and Melleship.
2) Richard Millachamp baptised 1763 Foleshill to Richard and Elizabeth. They baptise 2 other children in Foleshill and 1 in Bedworth
3) Richard Millerchip baptised 1765 Bedworth to Job and Elizabeth. This is the only child of theirs I can find in Bedworth/Foleshill/Exhall, maybe they were passing through?
I can find no Richard deaths between 1753 (1st baptism) and 1783 when the marriage occurs.
There are 3 marriages so assuming it is for all 3 Richards rather than a widowed Richard remarrying.
1) Richard Millerchip and Catherine Moore Exhall 1784
2) Richard Millerchip and Elizabeth Barkby Exhall 1786/7
3) Richard Millerchip and Frances WIlliams Bedworth 1793
The first Millerchips (Mallowchip/Millcheap/Millencheap) to come to the area seem to have been a John and Elizabeth who had children baptised in Bedworth and Foleshill in 1733, 1737 & 1739. Shallow coal pits began to be opened in the area bringing lots of colliers to the area.
Name variations - Mallowship, Millcheap, Millencheap, Millerchip, Millership, Millichamp, Millechamp, Millachamp, Mellowship, Mallowchip, Millencheap, Melleship. I think perhaps if they were newcomers so perhaps people were not used to their accents?
Anyway I wondered how you might go about narrowing down the Richards please?
Thanks for reading.
Best wishes,
Emma
