I was just thinking about you Seaweed! My knowledge is very limited for shipping, so I hoped you'd pop along :-)

Hi Seaweed, The ship was Baradine 145419 built 1921 I think I also think it was a P&O ship possibly passenger not cargo. It has a date stamp of Nov 1924 at Victoria docks. It also has this number Dis. A. No. 1039964 signed J W Thorpe, my granddad. Thank you

Hi

Where did you get this record from? I've just looked at the CR2s on Find My Past and there are 2 CR2 cards for a J W Thorpe, both have a Dis.A. No of 1039964 and Seawed would be able to confirm but I think these numbers were individual to the seaman.

The first is stamped 05 Nov 1924,rating- asst. steward and the stamped ship number is 145419, the reverse (?) of the card has also been scanned. That lists 7 other ship numbers and voyage dates ranging from 04.02.22 to 03.03.34.

The other one is for the same name and Dis A No and is date stamped 25 Jul 1934 - rank waiter. stamped ship number 140517, no other voyages listed.

I hate to rain on the parade, but as you have his enlistment into the Tank Corps  (which shows his mother as N.O.K.) on 18.10.1927 and a discharge date of 17. 10. 1933 this seaman's record is not at all certain to be for your J W Thorpe?

Do you have your Dad's birth cert from 1932/33? If so what as his Dad's occupation on that? If it confirms he was still in the army then,  that would help to discount this merchant navy record - I don't think the Tank Corps let you have a part time job working on ships :-)

Oh Boo, I hadn't seen the other one ☹️ So yes it does sound like I've jumped the gun slightly. I'm not sure where the image came from I've been through so many sites, I thought it might have been National Archives but I could be wrong. I had seen the list of dates at the bottom but hoped it meant something else ☹️

The  crew agreement for 1924  covering the date 05/Nov. seems to have been lost or destroyed. However the 1934 QA's for the vessel BELGENLAND O/N 140517 can be obtained for a fee from
https://www.mun.ca/mha/holdings/viewcombinedcrews.php?Official_No=140517
Among other things it should tell you his place of birth. Given that the Dis A number is unique to an individual and is the same on both  CR2 cards. You can then Discount or confirm that you have the correct man.
I would wait until you have obtained your fathers Birth Certificate or your grandfathers Army Record before going to the expense of contacting MHA.
Boo, I believe the CR1 and CR2 records on FindMyPast are the only ones available on line. The originals are at Southampton and there are poor Microfilm copies at Kew.

Thanks Seaweed, I wasn't sure and wondered if there was an alternate source other than the one I used to look at the images. (am always interested in alternate sources)

Hi, I'm not far from Southampton, would I be able to visit and look or do you think the chances are it's not my granddad in which case it's not worth going?
