Robinson's Lane, Sunderland
« on: Thursday 17 October 19 13:19 BST (UK) »
Hi

Is it just me or is Robinson's Lane missing from the census after 1901.

I have ancestors who were still living there at the time of their death in 1928 - but no trace of the street after 1901.
Could it be part of a small percentage of 'missing census'?

Thanks

Sue

Robinson's Lane was not there in 1928,(Slum clearance) see the 1919 map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/440591/557307/12/101064, it was where Outram Street is.
Robinson's Lane is on the 1895 map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/440591/557307/12/100215

There were only two houses in Robinson's Lane in the 1901 census. Outram Street was there in 1911.

Hi
I have the burial entry from Sunderland (Grangetown) Cemetery which clearly states that the two people I'm searching for died in 2 Robinsons Lane.
Dominic Rossi buried 23rd February 1928 - death occured in 2 Robinson Lane.
Antonia Rossi buried June 26th 1928 - death occured in 2 Robinsons Lane.
The same address that they can be found on the 1901 census.

You need the death certificate, as an original source, to confirm the address. As it stands that address does not exist in 1928. Can you give a link to the Sunderland (Grangetown) Cemetery entry, or a scan?

The only explanation I can think is that as there were only numbers 1 & 2 Robinson's Lane in 1901,it is that these were at the High Street end and were still there in 1928. The 1914 Directory shows  Robinson (sic)  Lane between 69 and 70 High Street East.

Hi Stan

Thanks for your help - I got the address from the Register of Burials for Sunderland Cemetery - copies are held on microfilm in Sunderland Local Studies.

Domenico and Antonia had several children who died as infants, and I have also found the burial of their daughter, Catarina, she died in 2 Robinson's Lane on the 21st March 1904 and was buried on the 24th March in Sunderland Cemetery.

Really, I just wanted to find them in 1911 as they don't appear to have left 'Robinson's Lane' from 1901 to 1928.

I will check High Street though and see if I can locate them!

Thanks again

Sue
