Skenford
« on: Monday 21 October 19 09:57 BST (UK) »
Hi
Would anyone with any history knowledge have heard of a place called Skenford? This is really confusing for me as the place doesn't seem to appear on any search engines. It's my ancestors birth place and on census he's put so many different places! On one its Orcop in Herefordshire. On another it's Kentford in Herefordshire. On another it's Scenford in Herefordshire. On another it's Merthyr! His Gaol records all show Skenford, Hereford. His mother is seemigly from Kilpeck in Herefordshire and his father from Skenfreth in Monmouthshire. Is that maybe the same place?!
Thanks

Would you like to give us his name and year of birth?  Have you obtained a birth certificate for him or is it before 1837?

We could then double check census records for his place of birth.

There is a Skenfrith

Skenfrith is a small village in Monmouthshire, south-east Wales. It is located on the River Monnow, close to the border between Wales and England, about 6 miles north-west of Monmouth. The road through the village was once the A40, linking Ross-on-Wye and Abergavenny

Perhaps obtaining Thomas's birth cert would clarify matters.

Thanks so much! I had the mmn of Edwards but couldn't find a birth record for Thomas anywhere. I will obtain the certificate though just to make sure. Just to take it a step further I also haven't been able to find his marriage certificate to someone called Hannah. I can't find Thomas in 1861 census but by 1871 he's married living in Merthyr with his wife Hannah born abt 1836 in Merthyr and daughters Emma and Sarah Jane born 1867 and 1869
