Always remember to make sure that you have a backup of your very valuable data before you make any major changes to your computer, the operating system or the software that you use. Ideally you should have a further copy of it outside of your own home in case something very terrible happens.

Hi Annie

"It did sound good, but I have tried to do it, and the 'make preferred' option is in pale writing so I can't click on it.  Also, a lot of the events already have a 'P' next to them.  To the best of my knowledge (which is scant at the best of times) I have never clicked on 'make preferred' so why some things are P and some not, is beyond me.

Back to the drawing board!"

It seems one problem has morphed into another which often happens.  Ah Well.
Many thanks for your suggestion anyway.

Not sure about FTM, but in many Windows programs which present things in a list, you can sort the list by clicking on the column heading, such as the date. Click again and the sort order reverses.

She may have accidentally clicked on a heading which doesn't make sense to her.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Is it the DATES in the first column that are scrambled or is it that the EVENTS column appears scrambled with 'Birth', 'Marriage' and 'Death' labels appearing seemingly randomly? check the dates and compare them with their neighbours, they may be in order.

If the latter she may have unknowingly changed a setting under the 'Timeline' heading. Click on the arrow to get a drop menu and see if any are ticked, try unticking any that are ticked and see if it reverts to what she is used to.

If it's the first then I have no idea.

I'm using FTM2014.1 on W7HP, trying Andrew's idea doesn't work on the 'Timeline' page headings but does work on the 'Facts' page.
Active links are now (after 13/04/2018) indicated by bold red italics. Just click on them.

The ones with 'pale writing' should be name & born which will automatically have a 'P' (unless he has 2 names & 2 birth dates) as it's only 'Facts' which have several dates which can be changed i.e. depending on which date of each event was entered initially & in which order.
If an event such as Census has been entered from 1911 back to 1841 then whichever date was initially entered would automatically be the 'P' e.g. 1911 unless she edits 1841 by clicking on it then choose 'Make Preferred'

If there's only 1 entry for any/all facts it will always automatically be 'pale writing' as there's nothing to compare it to with other dates.

Failing this can you post an image of what shows regarding the 'timeline' by clicking on 'Edit' then 'Facts'?

Thank you Annie.  You have made an elderly lady very, very, happy.
