Not really any help dating the photo, but out of interest the shop next door has the name Alex A Dodds above it.  Alex and his wife Jane can easily be found in census records in Front Street. Alex was a butcher, however in the 1911 he is an Innkeeper and his sons are butchers. Maybe Alex Allan Dodds was the Innkeeper at the Hamsteels Colliery Inn.

I don't know why I didn't think of that!  As a result of your comment, I have checked my extensive file of innkeepers in the area and I have found a man of that exact name who was an innkeeper at Esh - the next village along the road - at least from 1911 - 1914.  But it is still possible that he was at this pub for part of 1911.

Does the census record his address at that time?

In 1911 he was at 9 Front Street, Quebec.

The census record for Alexander Dodds is listed as Civil Parish Esh on the search, when you click into the transcription it gives the street address as 9 Front St Quebec Durham.

Give me a little time and I will find out!  The building is still there so I will simply ask the new owners for its street address

The only pub on Front Street Quebec was the Hamsteels Colliery Inn and that is now the Quebec Tea Rooms.  The other pub was at Marley's Houses so it looks very much like he was the publican at the Hamsteels Colliery Inn!

My previous information was wrong - he was at Esh Hill Top (The Board Inn) not from 1911-1914 but actually from 1914-1925.  That was my error, sorry for confusing the issue.  So it appears that you are right Jool!

Most of the people I have consulted give the date of the photo (based on the clothing of the people in it) as 1900-1910 and most of them said it was Edwardian - making it 1901 -1910 so I think you are pretty well on target.
