Charles Bates, Penn
« on: Friday 25 October 19 23:58 BST (UK) »
Hi!
I was wondering if anyone had any information on Charles Bates who was born c.1892 in Penn.
His older brothers were Joseph William (my great grandfather) and Albert Edward who I know both survived the first world war. I am trying to find out what happened to Charles as unfortunately I have no idea.
I have photos of the Bates, I know which one is Albert but I am unsure if another photo I have is Joseph or Charles so any Help that may identify him would be very much appreciated.
Thank you in advance

this may be your Charles
on census his p.o. given as Forty Green Bucks living in Penn with parents and lots of siblings - mother was Sarah
if these details match yours then his army records are on A******y He was wounded 25 Jun 1916 and suffered shell shock
It looks like he married Ada Allen and died 21 Dec 1962 age 71 - his probate record is on A*******y

As per your thread of 2009, if this is the family in 1901, then Albert is a ‘younger’ brother:

Thank you both for your replies.
Jamjar - Sorry I had forgotten I’d posted about them before, it was so long ago! Apologies though yes you are correct Albert was younger having been born in 1895.
Suzard - Yes that appears to be him :) I have his mother as Sarah Cox and Forty Green certainly rings some bells with me.
The only person who would know is my mother but unfortunately she has advanced Alzheimer’s now so it’s not possible to ask her and my grandparents have both passed away.
I have lots of photos and letters belonging to my grandmother that were passed down to me concerning the Bates and it’s such a shame I am the only one who enjoys them. If Charles has children there is hope that there are relatives out there somewhere who may enjoy seeing what I have. I found a newspaper article about Albert who married his childhood sweetheart when he was about 70 (off the top of my head!) How sweet!
At present I don’t have paid a....y membership due to many months inactivity but my local library offers free access so I will get myself down there. Thank you both very much for your help, its looking like I won’t be going down a dead end and I’ll hopefully find out more about him.

It looks pretty certain that Charles Bates and Ada had a daughter b 1927 -maybe she married and had children
