Hull Daily Mail  August 1926

ASSAULTED THE LICENSEE. COURT SEQUEL TO HULL HOTEL SCENE. LABOURER FINED. A scene at the Ferryboat Tavern, Wincolmlee, on Saturday night, resulted in Arthur Metheringham, a labourer, of York-street, being summoned at the Hull Police Court to-day by the licensee Wm. McPhee, for assault. During the hearing of the case a spectator twice interrupted, and had to be sent out of Court. Mr A. V. Dickenson, for the complainant, stated that at 9-20 on Saturday night, defendant and another man went into the smoke room of the Ferryboat Tavern. The wife of the licensee noticed their condition and refused to serve them, and the complainant requested them to leave the premises. In the passage, defendant took hold of Mr McPhee, threw him to the ground, struck him on the left arm above the right eye with his fist. Metheringham took hold of McPhee's throat with both hands, but the licensee eventually got assistance ,and defendant was ejected- …….

October 1919,
A smoking concert was held at Ferryboat Tavern, Wincolmlee. Monday, and an enjoyable evening was spent. The chair was taken by Mr E. Stevens, and the following artistes contributed Messrs Giblin, Bucknell, Tindle, Martin, Adams, and W. Thurloe. To the host and hostess, Mr and Mrs Leighton, great credit is due for the way they catered. The lady pianist was thanked for her services.

The 'host and hostess' do not have to be the licensees, but put here anyway.

Maybe you have to go back another generation to find the Jewish link .my great great grandfather was Jewish...I have 12 percent European Jewish DNA

The star of David .story and genes could have been passed down from one of Ann s grandparents
Names could be angliscized .
When you get the results you will see if  your fiance has any matches with people from Jewish ethnicity if you look at 4th cousin matches

None of the 8 trees on ancestry with Thomas Smith and Kate Newton have the parents of Thomas Smith senior .unless the closed tree owner knows .

Apologies for delay in replying, I was away with no wifi on laptop. Thank you Brigidmac for your time looking into this, I didn't have Thomas' brother and sister so I'll add them now. Waiting for my fiance's DNA results so can't wait to see if he does have Jewish heritage.

Chempat, thankyou for the articles and for your time, it's much appreciated. I'll carry on searching and hoping, cant get any more info from mother in law as her own mum never spoke of the family apart from a sister. She's in touch with a cousin who also wasn't told anything.
