You're perfectly correct. Even if someone did live there, which looks a bit unlikely, it would be a very long way to travel to Forfar for a baptism. Also if he had been resident outside the parish of Forfar, it would be usual for the parish of residence to be noted in the record.

I'm sure there must have been other Nethercraigs but none spring immediately to mind.

Can anyone find any marriage/death record for Jean Ormond (John and Katherine's daughter) who was baptized in Forfar in 1768? This might help yield more clues about John but I've been unsuccessful so far.

Also tried looking for the baptism records of other children post-1776 but not been able to find anything.

Thanks Dorrie, I may look into these marriage records. Won't bother looking at death record as, as you say, there probably won't be much relating to her parents on it.

I would look at the one in Dundee to James Maxwell first which links up with the death in 1846 as the age fits your Jean Ormond.

unfortunately not, just read the marriage to James Maxwell, and this Jean Ormond was daughter of a deceased David Ormond of Dundee. It would seem that this Jean Ormond was born in 1868 in Dundee.

I'm thinking it may be necessary to study the 4 other John Ormonds [listed on page 1 of this forum post] born in Angus between 1730 and 1750 in order to eliminate them from my search to determine which of the baptism records is my John Ormond, which will require me studying other marriage records.

Unfortunately this is further complicated by 3 of the 5 John Ormonds having a father also called John. Another issue is that it seems as though a few John Ormonds from other nearby parishes moved into Forfar (probably due to the linen weaving trade in the town).
