Goodfellow - UK Census lookup!
« on: Tuesday 29 October 19 19:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, i'm looking for a mysterious man named Henry Goodfellow.
He was a stone mason/cutter who married Maria Arnold in Cann, Dorset in 1822. He may have lived in or around Shaftesbury, Fontmell Magna or Cann - all in Dorset. Their marriage banns say he was not from the local Dorset parishes like Maria was.

I can find him on no England censuses it all so can't be certain when or where he was born.
His wife and four children Mary Ann (b.1823), George (abt 1834) Thomas (1836) and Jane (1838) appear on the 1841 Census in Fontmell Magna but Henry isn't there. To further complicate things his youngest daughter Jane does not appear in censuses after 1841, but I have no records of her death either.

His wife Maria dies in 1850 in Romsey, Hampshire, where their eldest daughter Mary Ann is a young widow. Both boys are servants elsewhere in Dorset but youngest Jane would be only 13, so not sure where she would have ended up if not with her father.

I would love it if someone could help me find Henry on a census, or at least an explanation for his absence.

Many thanks!!!!!
Ali

Think 12 year old Jane is a servant in the house of Sarah Jesser in Romsey, Hampshire in 1851.

Thank you so much, this is definitely Jane.

Now this just leaves the question of whether or not she was orphaned and Henry died before 1841. The 1841 Census doesn't list Maria as widowed though, only married. Tricky man to find.

There appear to be two further Goodfellow children with mmn Arnold in the years following Jane's birth.

The gro shows:
Emily Anne Homer Goodfellow reg. Jun 1842  Wincanton   and
Clement William Arnold Goodfellow reg. Sep 1844 Wincanton   so you may want to follow these through as if the right family it could mean that Henry was still alive up to the end of 1843 at least.

Finally, the only Henry Goodfellow baptism around the right time seems to be at Fovant, Wiltshire on 18 Dec 1796 to Henry & Fanny Goodfellow.  You might want to follow this up too.

Clement and Emily both seem to be living in a house 'ajoining the mill' in Wincanton on the 1851 Census, with mother and daughter named Mary and Helen Paddock. Would make sense if they were also parentless in 1851.

I have never been sure if the Fovant Goodfellows were the same ones I was looking for as they always seem to be a different family, but I will look into them all again. Thanks so much for the information x

It seems Clement and Emily are the kids of a coach builder named John Goodfellow, who appears living with them in the 1861 Census, so they're not who I'm looking for unfortunately  :(

+ Henry Goodfellow from Fovant appears to marry a woman named Mary and have 7 children in Fovant by 1851.

There is a Henry Goodfellow son of George & Sarah Goodfellow born in 1799 and baptised in Greenwich in 1800 who I thought was promising, but turns out this Henry dies and is buried in March 1800 as an infant.

Thanks so much for the help, I must find this man!
