Alice Woodward born Worksop 1866
« on: Thursday 31 October 19 09:50 GMT (UK) »
Hello. I'm trying to work out where Alice came from and what she did in her early life. She was my Dad's Grandma, when he was a boy she was a widow and ran a pub in Rotherham.
I think I have found her living with her aunt Hannah Webster on the 1871 census in Worksop, age 5, Hannah is a widow.
On the 1861 census Hannah is a widow, she has a boarder called John Woodward who I am thinking is Hannah's Father.
On the 1841 census John is with wife and 7 children, daughter Hannah is 10, and a son Samuel is 8 - I think he is Alice's dad.
On 1861 census Samuel is with wife and 2 infants.
On 1871 census Samuel is a widow and is a farm servant on a farm called Ratcliffe Grange. So I am guessing that he has gone into service and has put the kids with family, Alice being one of them.
On 1891 census Samuel is in Whiston near Rotherham with second wife Sarah - there was a Sarah Grainger working at the same farm in 1871, and her age fits. His son William from first wife is living with them.
On 1891 census Alice is a servant at a Vicarage in Barnenbt le Wold.
In 1897 Alice gives birth to my Grandma Ethel Mary Redhead in Rotherham.
On 1901 census Alice is in Rotherham with husband James and three chidren.
In 1910 Alice's husband James dies.
Could anybody help to confirm if I've got all this right, or am I barking up the wrong tree?
I can't find Alice between 1871 and 1891, and I can't find out what happened to her mother, could anybody help with that too.
Thanks in advance.
Dave

Thanks avm. Yes that could be right, my date of 1866 was just a guess from her age on the 1871 census.

Have you been buying (or finding online if available) the birth, marriage and death certificates for your family, so that you can logically work backwards?  Or are you relying on censuses?

e.g.
'On 1891 census Samuel is in Whiston near Rotherham with second wife Sarah - there was a Sarah Grainger working at the same farm in 1871, and her age fits.'
Sorry, even if true, it is just speculation until a marriage is found. (which larkspur probably did.)
