Looking for evidence of Thomas McKinney (cobbler) in Selkirk and his son William Kinney born 1733 in Scotland (who settled in America in Rowan, NC).

Welcome to rootschat, DKinney.

Where have you looked for them so far?

Where does the evidence for William born 1733 in Scotland (which part?) come from - just his death info?

Unfortunately, this info comes from family tales and an historical fiction book based on William Kinney: Liberty Man, written by one of William's 5th great grandsons.  I have traced family origins that can be substantiated back to Jesse Kinney, William Kinney's son (1778-1857).  William remains a mystery although everyone is adamant he is from Scotland.  (The historical fiction book indicates Selkirk; I've contacted the author for some clarification.)

Yes, but to no avail.  My daughter began the search several years ago, but the genealogist's information was inaccurate/mixed.  I find this to be true of information on the genealogy websites.  I've not been able to find Thomas MacKinney / McKinney or William McKinney / Kinney on Scottish or English sites.  However, I'm positive that my Thomas is not Sir Thomas Kinney of Norfolk.  There are land documents for William Kinney, 1799, in Rowan, NC and this is my William Kinney.

What other spellings have you used instead of Kinney?
