Looking for location of these places in the county of Angus
« on: Friday 01 November 19 09:09 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for the locations of these places which I have found on records in the county of Angus:

Newmuir, parish of Forfar (1700s parish records)
Tinaston, parish of Dunnichen (1700s parish records)
Neather Craig, parish of Forfar (1700s parish records)
Prin / Prim Cottage, parish of Forfar (1841 census residence of Charles Ormand and family)

Any help would be much appreciated.
North West, North Wales and Isle of Man:

Ward, Campbell, Cowin, Cowell, Parry, Fryer, Davies, Hughes, Briscoe, Jones, Spencer, Brownbill, Crowfoot, Nield, Randles, Youde

Gozo, Malta:

Apap / De Apapis, Camilleri, Grech, Muscat, Micallef, Custo, De Nasi

Angus, Scotland:

Ormond, Salmond, Cook, MacDonald

For Newmuir and Neather Craig see previous discussion in https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=820715.0. No point in duplicating what has gone before.

SP lists two Charles Ormonds in Forfar in 1841.

From the transcriptions at FreeCEN and FindMyPast, one of these, aged 30, is at what is mistranscribed as West Towerend. This should read West Townend and is the present West Port, at the junction of West High Street, Glamis Road and Dundee Loan. In 1851 this family is in Dundee Loan.

The other, aged 60, is in North Loan. This is the earlier name for what is now North Street, at the East Port. He is not listed in 1851.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Re. "Tinaston", do you have sight of the original entry? Might it be "Finneston" - just north east of Dunnichen?

Thanks Kay

Hmm..

interesting that Prin Cottage doesn't seem to appear on an 1863 map, it might be further North East out of the bounds of the map

It may just be unnamed.   Lillybank appears to be a large house

Added - Gowan Bank and a Lunanhead Bank which follow on from Prim Cottage  in the census are shown on modern maps as nearby areas of Forfar

Do you think it could be another name for the Poor House which is nearby?
