John WOOD and Sarah Ann TAYLOR Marriage Certificate
« on: Saturday 02 November 19 13:31 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,
I could do with some help and advice please.
I have two families of relatives joined by the marriage of the above people. I have located a possible marriage registered in Barnsley in Q4/1890 and I cannot find an alternative. The marriage will probably have taken place in one of several villages between Barnsley and Wakefield. I have contacted both Barnsley RO and Wakefield RO and they have not been able to locate the record. Would the records have been transferred from one LRO to another LRO if a boundary change occurred subsequently, as has happened in this area? If I contact the GRO, what information will they need from me?

I have them linked here on a record of baptism of one of their sons:

CHURCH OF ENGLAND PARISH RECORDS        BAPTISM
ALL SAINTS DARTON
DATE 10th NOVEMBER 1907  BORN 30th SEPTEMBER 1907
NAME   JOHN LAWRENCE WOOD
MOTHER   SARAH ANN WOOD
FATHER   JOHN WOOD
OCCUPATION   FIREMAN
RESIDENCE   BLACKER

Here they are in 1911:

         CENSUS      1911

Surname   Names   Rel.   Status   Age   Year   Occupation   Place Born
Wood   John   Husband   M   45   1866   Colliery Fireman   Notton
Wood   Sarah Ann   Wife   M   43   1868      Newmillerdam
Wood   Annie   Daughter   S    17   1894      Mapplewell
Wood   George   Son   S    15   1896   Pony Driver in Pit   Mapplewell
Wood   Wilfred   Son      11   1900   School   Mapplewell
Wood   Martha Doris J   Daughter      9   1902      Mapplewell
Wood   Zillah   Daughter      5   1906      Mapplewell
Wood   John Lawrence   Son      3   1908      Mapplewell
confirmed by family members

Here is Sarah Ann with her grand parents:

         CENSUS      1881
Woolley Edge
Surname   Names   Rel.   Status   Age   Born   Occupation   Place Born
Taylor   William   Head   m   75   1806      Mapplewell
Taylor   Georgena   Wife   m   61   1820      Kings Norton, Worcs
Taylor   Sarah Ann   Granddaughter      13   1868   Domestic Servant   Newmillerdam

and the rest of her family:

         CENSUS      1881
Warren House, Woolley
Surname   Names   Rel.   Status   Age   Born   Occupation   Place Born
Taylor   Alfred   Head   m   37   1844   Stonemason Journeyman   Woolley Edge
Taylor   Martha   Wife   m   37   1844
Taylor   John William   Son      15   1866
Taylor   George   Son      10   1871
Taylor   Frances   Daughter      8   1873
Taylor   Albert   Son      6   1875
Taylor   Edward   Son      4   1877
Taylor   Lucy   Daughter      1   1880
Taylor   Frederick   Son         1881
again confirmed by family members.

I am reasonably confident this is John Wood's parents and family:

         CENSUS      1871
Notton
Surname   Names   Rel.   Status   Age   Born   Occupation   Place Born
Wood   George   Head   m   40   1831   Ag. Lab.   Newmillerdam
Wood   Sarah   Wife   m   34   1837      Norton*
Wood   Zillah   Daughter      10   1861   Scholar   Notton
Wood   John   Son      6   1865      Notton
Wood   George   Son      3   1868      Notton

* Norton not Notton. There are three villages called Norton in Yorkshire

I have checked his brother and sisters and their families records but cannot find a more definite link. Am I missing something? Have I made a mistake? Any suggestions anybody?

The 1911 census should tell you how long they have been married  :)

To order from the GRO you need to know (From freebmd)
Dec qtr 1890
Taylor    Sarah Ann
Wood    John
Barnsley reg dist.    9c   393

The form will ask for the year and whether you know the reference.  Tick that you know the reference.
It will the ask for the information mentioned above - Names - Registration District and reference numbers

Thanks Rosie99 and CaroleW.
Rosie99, I hadn't realised there was an on-line ordering service, thankyou.
CaroleW I had recently found that census entry, but unfortunately it doesn't really help. Pity a parent or sibling weren't visiting at the time. Thankyou. I might be asking for help again soon as I've already started researching previous generations of Woods in the area and it appears to far from simple.

I assume that you have already found it but this is the link anyway.  You just need to register.
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

Marriage certificates are paper copies sent by post but you can order some birth & death records as PDF's.  They are £7 compared to the paper copy at £11.
