You can call off the bloodhounds as I have now solved my own question very much by luck  ;D

Mary and Bertha did both go to America. Mary married a George Bell in Iowa in about 1890, about the same time that Herbert was also marrying. Whether there was a divorce or they just separated is not clear though both parties seem to have given the impression to their descendants that the other half had died  :o

Mary finally died at Lodi, California in 1945 while Bertha married Dr Elmer David Augspurger in Chicago in 1907 and died at Lodi in 1967.

Still some mysteries with this family but not in Cornwall.
