OFFER: McCarthy's Cemetery, Castlereagh, NSW
« on: Saturday 02 November 19 23:42 GMT (UK) »
The oldest Catholic burial ground in NSW, McCarthy’s Cemetery is not associated with a church building, but has evolved from a private burial ground to a consecrated cemetery. In 1806, a time when Catholicism was not officially recognised in the colony, ex-convict settlers James and Mary McCarthy buried their daughter Elizabeth at the southern end of their Cranebrook property. The land was consecrated in the 1830s, and became a cemetery for many Catholics in the Castlereagh community.

The cemetery is currently under control of Penrith Lakes Development Corporation, and is open at 10am on the 1st Saturday of the month by arrangement.

I went there yesterday, and was given details of the headstone inscriptions. I also took photos.

Regards

Further to the above post - I've now created a website for the cemetery - http://mccarthyscemetery.bravesites.com

If anyone wants a lookup of the info PLDC gave me, please let me know.
