James Gillard of Chard
« on: Sunday 03 November 19 15:40 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me to find which James Gillard was a Photographer in Chard Somerset 1850 - 1920. I do not have access to Ancestry or Find My Past so cannot look at census. I have a photo taken by him and would like to identify the year as near as possible.

If I have posted this incorrectly - sorry, but cannot find a county/or town under which to put this.

He's in Mappowder in the 1891 and 1901 censuses: a photographer in 1891, sub-postmaster in 1901:

Only one James Gillard in Somerset around that birth year - 1852 but doubt he's your man

Are you sure you have the right death?  The 1911 entry was also living in the Wellington RD in 1911 and the 1920 death reg shows age at death as 69

The Wellington RD spanned both Somerset and Devon

Looking at the birthplaces of the children it would appear that the family moved from Chard to Mappowder (30 miles away) circa 1885. He wasn't a photographer in the 1881 census and it is possible that he was only active as a photographer in Chard for a few years in the early 1880's.

There aren't many references to him online: there is an 1880's photo by him in the Simmonds Collection: http://archiveswest.orbiscascade.org/ark:/80444/xv05914
