Lan Colliery Explosion, Wales, December 6th. 1875
« on: Tuesday 05 November 19 20:45 GMT (UK) »
I am researching various colliers who died or were injured in the Lan disaster of 1875. The name Shadrach Davies is amongst the list of injured - he was badly burned. While we have located a history for many of the colliers, we cannot find any reference to Shadrach Davies beyond the Welsh Newspaper archives, where he is listed as a married man, badly burned in the disaster, living in Gwaelod y Garth. It is clear some of the men were buried in unmarked graves  - we have found those who were buried at St Catwgs Church via the Parish Register, but nothing about Shadrach. If anyone can locate him, it would be of huge interest the Lan History Project. Thank you, researchers. I keep my fingers crossed!

Are you saying that he did not immediately die, and so could have left the district and lived a lot longer?

Any idea at all as to his age?

1874  newspaper report, is it the same Shadrack?

A case of non-maintenance was brought before the Board, where the magistrates at Llantrissant had only made all order on the son, Shadrack Davies, of Llantrissant to pay 2s per week towards the support of his father, although it was said that the son was a collier of the Rhondda Valley, earning 8s. and 10s a day, and sometimes more. The decision of the Bench did not give general satisfaction to the guardians, who seemed to think that a man earning 8s.. or 10s. a day, could well pay a larger sum towards the support of his father.

That is so interesting. I am now going to look at the Phillips girl mentioned. I live in the house of Abraham Phillips, the overman killed in the Lan disaster. Abraham's sibling family was vast. I'm sure I remember a Gwenllian. I will look in the morning and post tomorrow. I am so grateful. This fills a gap in our research.  :)

You have been quick. Makes me realise how bad at this I am! I have only the free sites. I am really grateful and about to to pass on the messages from you to the Lan History Group. Big hugs all round!

Chempat. That's an interesting one. It could be. Is there a way to know I wonder. This men had a tough life ... children down too in those days. They earned 6d a day on the ventilation doors. When Abraham Phillips died in the disaster it was December 6th. The Master, Thomas William Booker, gave her notice to quit the cottage by New Year's day. Victorian values! Thanks again.
