newspaper obituary and census help
« on: Wednesday 06 November 19 08:57 GMT (UK) »
I have Cornelius Phillips born 1868 in Wales.
He married Annie Mildred and they had 3 children.
By 1911 these children are with different relatives in Wales and England  and parents cannot be found. His wife has not been traced.

Canada 1921 census he is 58 and born Wales. All entries match on the record.
Arrival  1910 . Residence Winnipeg Winnipeg South Manitoba

There is also a Cornillias Phillips  in the 1916 Canada Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, but he is born England and Dutch. A bit confusing, is this a different man ?

I am certain this is the correct man  in the death index.
  Cornelius Phillips Age:73 Birth Date:26 Jan 1868
Death Date:22 Dec 1941 Death Place:Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Can anyone help me with the obituary, even though I have Worldwide Ancestry I can`t access the image.
Newspapers Index
Obituary Date:24 Dec 1941 Obituary Place:Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Thanks.

The 1916 entry for Cornillias does seem odd but it looks like his occupation is the same as it is for the Cornelius in 1921.

Here is the 1926 entry for Cornelius from Library and Archives Canada, line 40.....

Thanks a lot , this does seem to be the same man as 1921, is he now the head of the house ?
No column for his occupation, but I am sure it`s him.
I`m still baffled as to where his wife went.
I  can`t find an immigration / passenger list for Cornelius, around the time he states he came.
Sometimes you have to admit defeat  ;)

Do you have a surname for Annie Mildred? I don't see a marriage for a Cornelius Phillips to an Ann/Annie, unless I've missed something?

The death cert for Cornelius is available through this link in case it is of interest. Not very expensive. If you click "detail view" on the reg you can see what info may be provided about him if it was known. No guarantees, of course.

I did find the death index thanks.

It is confusing,  he was born as Davies but mother later married Phillips who seems to have been his father.
Marriages Mar 1900   Davies  Cornelius    Marylebone /  Tompkins  Annie Mildred     Marylebone
First son was Ernest Cornelius Davies born 1900, baptism
Father:  Cornelius Davies   Mother:  Annie Mildred Davies

By 1901 Cornelius Davies  is calling himself Phillips.
Cornelious Phillips  33 b Haverfordwest
 Annie M Phillips  19 b Paddington
 Ernest C (Cornelius) Phillip  7/12 b Marylebone

2 more sons are born by 1907.
By 1911 two  are sent to Wales  and one stays with Joe Tompkins  60   Edlesborough, Buckinghamshire and  Sarah Tompkins  50  wife b London who are his grandparents.
